White and Page VS guitar hero and fun
This is really old now, but it's something I wanted to discuss with people.
http://www.nme.com/news/the-white-stripes/45521 I like nme but it's the first source i found with the comments they made.
So, dear Mr. White, and Mr. Page,
You are both dicks. I enjoy the music you have created, and the things you have given the industry (Page for his studio magic in the 70s) however, fuck off. Guitar Hero, Rock Band etc are just fun. If someone likes your music because they heard it in a game? Good, they like your music. Don't be a prick about it. If you want everyone to experience your music first hand, then maybe don't charge $150 (the white stripes) and $178-$250 (the zeppelin upcoming 2010 tour est cost) so the average person can't afford to see you anyway, on the chance you even come to their city.
- Sincerely Michel "I never really liked zeppelin anyway" Loranger
Anyway, how does everyone feel about kids being exposed to music through video games like guitar hero? Personally, I'm fine with it. If a kid plays rock band, and because of it goes out and buys every album the Clash every made, awesome. Getting music to kids is good. No one is claiming that guitar hero makes you good at guitar, it's just a game. Maybe some of the people playing will even go out and start a real band because of it, and for the ones who don't. big deal.

Re: White and Page VS guitar hero and fun
Eh, I'm of two minds on this one. On the one hand, some of my best memories come from pawing through old record stores, finding a random piece of vinyl, buying it simply because I liked the artwork, and then having my mind extensively blown because of the great music (got into the Murder City Devils, The Locust, Melt Banana, and a host of other weird shit this way). I really think that music is best when it takes a little work to find it and enjoy it, and Guitar Hero just doesn't fit into that model.
On the other hand, finding the stuff on Guitar Hero is generally easy as hell, as most of it is mainstream alt-rock. You can go to Itunes, Best Buy, etc. etc. etc. and find it anywhere. So what this boils down to, for me, is a couple of incredibly out of touch individuals getting pissy because people are listening to their music in a format that isn't exactly to their liking, i.e. one that creates a cliquish little club for their more affluent fans and gives them a metric fuckton of money.
Not surprising. I've always been "meh" on Guitar Hero anyway.
/philosophizing.

I support their Guitar Hero bashing. I like Harry Potter, Twilight and Avatar as well. Fight me everyone.
Re: White and Page VS guitar hero and fun
I think guitar hero and Rock band are fun...but I agree with White and Page on alot of things. When I was a kid...we didn't really have video games, or if we did, they didn't spend hours a day locked in our rooms playing them. And video games didn't have soundtracks other than computer generated beep and blips. We had to have a life outside video games. Today, kids spend alot of time and money in front of there computers and video games. Many of them will never set foot in a record store or buy a physical piece of music. The only exposure they get to music is through soundtracks to video games, movies, tv shows, and whatever is playing in the ads between tv shows, etc. Instead of heading to the music shop and buying a guitar with their christmas money...they're buying the latest guitar hero, and pretending to play along to whatever songs the label paid the most to get in some video game. Anything that puts people in front of screen, pretending to play music, instead of buying aguitar and learning to play along to records they bought, is a shitty thing, in my mind.

Avatar was just Dances With Wolves, but with smurfs.
Twilight is legitimately evil.
I liked the first five Harry Potter books. The last two and all the movies suuuuuuck.
Guess they'll have to fight both of us.

Eh, it promotes abstinence only education, pro-life politics, is generally hellaciously racist towards Natives, promotes the concept that a woman is nothing without her man, and (since Stephanie Whats-her-fuck is a good little Mormon) 10% of her earnings (which is a whole fuckload) go to the Church of Latter Day Saints, which tends to earmark that money for anti-gay propaganda.KYLESTYLE wrote:Care to elaborate? That is the most ridiculous criticism of Twilight I have ever read. I like it because it sucks.Hollow wrote:Eh, it promotes abstinence only education, pro-life politics, is generally hellaciously racist towards Natives, promotes the concept that a woman is nothing without her man, and (since Stephanie Whats-her-fuck is a good little Mormon) 10% of her earnings (which is a whole fuckload) go to the Church of Latter Day Saints, which tends to earmark that money for anti-gay propaganda.KYLESTYLE wrote:Care to elaborate? Eh, it's still true. The books do suck, though. They're also evil.grind/bro wrote:That is the most ridiculous criticism of Twilight I have ever read. Re: White and Page VS guitar hero and fun
Guitar Hero isn't only mainstream stuff. The games developers have always liked to add in lesser known bands and even small local bands from the east coast / whatever city they live in. In guitar hero 1, 2, 3 etc. Sure there will always be the big ones that the labels pay to get put in the games or the developers go out to try and get. Some sweet shit i found from guitar hero 2. The band Made in Mexico. from Rhode Island. They rule. After checking them out more found AIDS Wolf. was surprised i had never heard them before since then i have been into both.
