I used to do this with Mikey and Troy for Are You Afraid Of The Dark? episodes six years ago.

The Tale of the Twisted Claw - Season 1 Episode 4

One night Dougie and Bostick, two friends, play a trick on an old woman who lives in a creepy house. On Halloween night, they trick or treat at her house, only to find that she has a special treat for them. They receive a magical twisted claw that can grant them three wishes a piece. However, they soon find out that the wishes come at a price.

NOTE: This story was told by David.
This episode first aired on Halloween 1991, as the pilot.

---

This episode started off seemingly in the middle of a story. Some kid having a nightmare about a grim reaper guy, then waking up and it turns out true. Then it cuts to the midnight society and the kid telling it says it's not done. The others complain about how nobody has a story then David, the quiet one, says he has a story.

It's funny because the girl says "Ok David, you haven't told a story in a long time!" but David told the story in Episode 3 which is the previous episode. Ha. But anyway this was apparently the pilot and that makes sense cause it was one of the best in my opinion.

So... David began telling the story. It cut to a cool techno remix of the ayaotd theme. Then he told his story... two close friends, Dougie and Bostick, are making shenanigans on halloween. One is a shyer, more moral follower. The other is a risk taking leader. I really liked the characters cause I think the story told just enough about them. They were believable and I could relate to it.

It really reminded me of my halloween shenanigans with a close friend I had named Dan. It was almost the exact same situation. We used to smash pumpkins and I would screw up car windshields and we'd light signs and stuff on fire and play with firecrackers and stuff. It was the craziest I got, at that age, and I loved it.

But I digress. They did some shenanigans which were something I could relate to. Then they went to the cliche "haunted house" with a "witch" living in it to spray whipped cream on her door. She opened it and got whip creamed, then backed into a pot and smashed it. They ran away of course.

Then they went trick or treating and made their rounds, then went back to that house. The old lady gave them a Vulture's claw, which was something that could give them three wishes each. They left and the shyer one wished they stopped trick or treating and went home.

They then ran into a bunch of kids, "punks" as the credits called them. They looked like some of my friends. These kids were mean and stole Dougie/Bostick's candy, then chased them away. Dougie/Bostick went home and were sad.

The next day at school, the risk-taking one wished he could beat this jock guy at a running thing. They had the run and a dog ran into the jock, tripping him and making him break his leg. But the risk-taking one won the gold medal.

The shyer one said to stop wishing cause bad stuff happened every time. They argued at one of their houses and one wished that the other's parents were dead. Then the other one got a phone call.. saying that the kid's parents were in the hospital. It was really freaky actually, I have dreams like this sometimes where it's believable that everything in life has gone wrong. Anyway the other kid wishes that his grandpa was there cause he'd know what to do.

The kid's grandpa is dead though. A ghost car pulls up to the driveway and they freak out. The shy kid wishes that they never broke the pot and that none of the stuff happened. They open the door and parents are home, saying they narrowly missed getting hit by a car. Then the doorbell rings again and the unbroken pot is sitting there with a message saying "Trick or Treat"

I liked the characters in this. The story really was freaky. The concept of misusing wishes is overused but they handled it right. I loved the part of the kid's parents suddenly being in the hospital. I also loved the appearance of the punks and the halloween shenanigans.

It's obvious that tons of work was put into it. This is intended to be scarier than the other episode, I'm almost positive, due to it being a pilot. All the extra work paid off and I wish more episodes were like this. Cause this really is one of the best, and I don't usually give super high ratings like this.

9.5/10.
