Don't expect the "hardcore Metallica fans" to be into this. Lou Reed made a career of bringing a highly literate sensibility to rock music. Sadly, most Metallica fans are borderline illiterate. As both a Metallica fan and a Lou Reed/VU fan, I'm just thankful to hear the artists taking risks at this stage of their career and trying something new. I wish other elder statesmen were progressing their music rather than doing reality shows or hosting American Idol .

^this same reaction can be applied to the above track by the way. i love the velvet underground and early metallica but it's not like this track is too "out there" for people to comprehend or something, it's just a bunch of washed up old dudes doing what both parties have been doing for awhile... taking themselves way too seriously and trying to cling to relevance thus producing absolutely hilarious results. metallica has been embarrassingly bad for 20 years now.

This album is going to be like the musical equivalent of The Room. We're all going to be quoting it to death by years end, reveling in it's impoverished state.

Maybe you and I listened to different songs but I didn't hear these feeble, washy, dream-of-being-ride-the-lightning-throwaway-but-more-like-a-basic-1-2-4-progression-that-characterized-Metallica-in-the-90s riffs as a "risk" of any kind... closer to the same tepid wimpery I've come to expect of them since 1993 (and yes, I've been listening to Metallica since 1993, why, I could not say). Surely I won't disagree with your statement about Lou Reed and literacy, but is this track not him continuing to bring this literate sensibility to rock music? Doesn't feel like a "risk" to me, at least as far as content goes. Perhaps the "risk" you refer to is simply struggling to attach his usual fare to this type of music, but I'd say that surpasses risk and becomes lunacy; granted, that remains my opinion but I'm open to why you'd think otherwise. As both a Metallica fan and a Lou Reed/VU fan, I'm just thankful to hear the artists taking risks at this stage of their career and trying something new.
I doubt most of the complaints regarding this track will focus on Lou Reeds integrity but rather the context of his presence in this plodding monstrosity...
Really? Let's compare the youthful contemporaries of both artists... most of the metal community from the bay area in the early-mid eighties who continue to produce music are either in a similar echelon as Metallica and have long since realized that cannibalizing middle american values is the only way to maintain a career in music in this genre, or they remain the same interesting, worthwhile, and all-around "metal" guys they were when I was in short-pants... I'm sorry but as hard as I try I just can't see anything mildly "risque" in this action insofar as Metallica is concerned. This song could have appeared on the Black Album with Hetfield instead of Reed and raised no eyebrows.I wish other elder statesmen were progressing their music rather than doing reality shows or hosting American Idol .
Lou Reed I suppose should be lauded simply because he continues to create music, and certainly I can respect your notion that the aesthetic of this track provides a "challenge" to many listeners of said music... but again, his youthful contemporaries of the late 60s NY scene were likely providing more "risk" in their formative years, in so far as challenging notions of musical juxtaposition goes, let alone as they grew into careers supported by college-age listeners looking for danger in the 70s... I'm struggling to think of any that are still active, it's not exactly my forte as far as listening material goes.
In summary Lars is Hitler and I refuse to endorse anything he bumbles through

I can't listen to the whole song, it's so bad. Also is it just me or has Lars get worse at playing drums every album since that Mission Impossible song? I'm sure it's the context of the song in the album and all that but anyone can play what he's playing nowadays. It's now embarrassing to say now that he's one of the reasons I started playing drums (For Whom The Bell Toll/Enter Sandman)
