Because I can join, but I don't do well with moral obligation.

It would be great to get people that want to learn and help in anyway they can. I don't think there should be a obligation to do something however. Which i think ebony disagrees with. Membership will give you a vote at the annual general meeting (if you attend), etc.

Trust me, this is by no means a power grab or anything of that sort. This is to make us eligible for funding from the city for shows and the fest. If we do a few simple things each year (elect a board, have an AGM, etc.) we can get quite a bit of money. Up until now the fest has been entirely paid for out of the pockets of the people involved and we just can't afford to keep doing that. Every year we've worked at a loss, and while we all knew what we were getting into, finding another way of doing things that will allow us to still pay rent and eat would be nice.

I understand your apprehension, as quite often the people who do these sorts of things are the last people who should be involved with punk or hardcore, but I've been working with all of these people for years, and I can tell you that we absolutely have the best interests of the Victoria hardcore scene at heart.

haha, no worries. i don't doubt anybody's sincerity whatsoever. i understand that we need all the funding and support we can get. a bit more information than what was given in the initial post would be cool, but i guess that's what the newsletters are for. i'm pretty in the dark about the technicalities of these things, but way into participating.

Speak for yourself. I plan on running this city with an iron fist. It's just a matter of "persuading" the board of directors to follow my first five year plan.
Seriously though, it's totally understandable that people would be a little iffy to get involved with this given how minimal information we have at the moment. I'm pretty anxious to get a lot of the details hammerd out, and I would imagine that the others are too. We'll be sure to make information available as soon as we have it so that everybody can make informed desicions.

Also, it would be rad if more than just the usual clutch of hardcore kids joined. Personally I'd love to see some of the more straight up punk rock kids get into this. And metal dudes. And hot babes (not that I don't think you're a hot babe, Ebony, I just don't want you to feel singled out as the only babe.) We all know people who are kind of on the fringes of hardcore and this could be a great way to get them more involved. People tend to care more about things that they feel like they're a part of it.

well you can read that part over again for starters, and if you have any actual real questions about what i stated above in the original post i made, feel free to email the address i gave in it. thats why i put it there. to be used.

we have a society because of the size of our hardcore scene, for one thing. its small. its more difficult to get peole out to support, also our venue situation suck right now. the small amount of people that we have here that are actually involved are amazing people.. we need to have a board of directors in order to have a society. in order to have all of these things, we need members. not only for fun, but actually legally, we need them in order for the society and the board meetings to exist. this is a positive thing for our scene.

members will be on a register in my files, and will be required to make the BEST possible effort to attend annual board meetings (that means yearly) and also to volunteer to help out when we host large events (which right now is once a year)....

Not at all. We've set up a board simply as a first step. This is just to get incorporated. We'll set a date for an AGM asap, and when that happens whoever shows up can vote on a new board of directors and propose changes to the mandate we're drawing up. This original board is simply a stop-gap in order to get the ball rolling, and then anyone who is a member will have full voting privileges at the AGM. We want to make this as democratic and inclusive as possible. Once we have a final draft of the mandate written we'll post it up here in order for everyone to read it, and that way you'll be able to come in informed to the AGM. We want everyone involved as much as possible. Members can nominate themselves to the board, and volunteers will be asked simply to help with shows and promotion. The mandate itself mainly deals with what we hope to accomplish as a society. We're taking a lot of cues from the Ska Society, and also learning as much as possible from their early mistakes.

that's okay, people seem to keep forgetting that, which is why we really need to spread the word and get people that are interested, to become members! i don't have enough yet, so we need more. and most definetly not enough yet to have an agm. ill go over my list so far tonight and you can bug whoever you want, outside of who we already have.
