Re: Video From Last night
But seriously, who didn't see this coming? I honestly think it could've been WAY worse. The last beat kids show that they had here had 200 people show up. You gotta kinda see it coming when you do a reunion show for them, then get them to let everyone they know about it that it's gonna get crazy. I thought more people would show up to be honest.
I play bass. I play guitar. I do both poorly. What's up.

White Ribs destroyed it, so did Promises. Was outside telling people to shush like an old granny during Shared Arms, sorry dudes. BK were epic fun.
And Tambo, we chatted about this earlier, but I just wanna say again that while it obviously could have been way worse and was somewhat preventable, that doesn't diminish the shit that got broken or how upset Tyler (and Troy?) are about this. I think it's pretty cool that Tyler's reaction has been "lets find a better way of doing this" as opposed to "FUCK YOU GUYS NO MORE SHOWS". Now that could have been way worse.

I would also be happy to pitch in for a new one.

Re: Video From Last night
I sat in a chair on the patio like a granny telling every single little fuck to keep the door closed during the music because nobody seemed to enjoy that rule. Oh and the yelling, people love yelling in your backyard. The roudyness made me very uneasy and I was nervous for you guys, so I had to leave. Wasent really expecting a raging party for Beat Kids fans. I will pitch in to help fix anything that was broken, and I suggest we make any future Troyler shows private on facebook, and definety invite only like the guys just said. Some friends of the legendary castle werent as quiet and un-roudy as I would expect, either.

I still think having it even invite only isn't going to solve the problem. A house is a house. I feel doing invite only is not going to help grow and nurture a scene. It seems like it would be nothing more than a movie night with friends, or even more crudely, a circle-jerk. It's not a bad thing to have a negative learning experience. I just think a house isn't the best location to have music shows with aggressive music. A house is much more likely to get some noise complaints, things are much more likely to get broken, and issues of business are much more likely to get taken personally. Victoria NEEDS a great venue for alternative music to have a home.

About actual videos/pictures from last night... do those exist?

Tyler, sorry your house is hurting and that you were not ok with the show. It's your house, and that's your deal and I might feel exactly how you do, if i had a show for someone else' band and it went the way it did. However, when troy and jer and I were joking about a beat kids house show and then decided we could play that one, we were very up front about how brutal it would be, but troy said it was ok and he'd just get more security. I don't think you can play dumb and expect that it wasn't going to be a shit show (and yeah, in my mind it was way better than i thought it would be). Also, I "manned up" and had our last show "ever" at my house last year and I'm sure if you were there you would know it was much worse... We expected it though and prepared for it by taking everything out of our house that could break. Either way, we got a broken window and probably some shit stolen. We also had our landlord threaten to beat the shit out of us if we ever did that again and it's only because I'd lived there for 3 years without a strike before that he was even that lenient. But for me, it was worth it because it was my band and I knew the consequences going into it. However, I think it would be much different if it was Promises last show I hosted and all of that happened to me. I'd probably have to harvest tambo's organs to pay for the repairs.
Anyway, I think we all expected it, and that doesn't justify peoples' behaviour, and it sucks, and it sucks. On the bright side since there were so many people, did you guys get a good amount of money for hardcore fest? maybe dip out of that for things that broke? I kind of thought that was the point of us playing was so you guys could make a bunch of money... Also on the bright side, no cops! That's a bonus...
edit: i might add that I had a hell of a time and thanks for hosting it!

I'm not trying to pull the "It wasn't me" card (aka the Shaggy card) on this one but I had very little involvement with the planning of this show, as our house shows tend to be planned by one or the other of us. which normally makes sense, right? one person plans the date and contact with the touring band and invites a few people and it's all good. I suppose because of how much of a machine our planning system has become, I assumed it would be pretty much the same as the other shows. which you guys have to admit have generally had the same manageable ideal turnout probably a dozen times now. I shouldn't have been so naive and should have expected what happened. I don't know who got invited or how. I don't know how open troy was about inviting friends or checking with us. or how authoritative he was on the set time thing. I should be more involved since he's the "fun" one and I'm the one who prefers the side of caution.
I want it to be made clear that I love Beat Kids and blame absolutely nothing on them. I think it's just the large following and all that which led to everyone telling everyone else where we lived so casually. there was also a giant lack of respect for our rules with all the kids we didn't know. I am so surprised that someone can go to someone's house, have the person who lives there tell them something, and just totally disregard it.
here's what I am thinking for the future
-holding strong on our 3 band limit. always. no last minute jumping on. even if the band has a "5 minute set" or if someone "just got added to the tour" or anything
-any bigger band shows will have some sort of first-come-first-serve list of people who can be there, maybe some internet messaging thing of people who will have their names on a list and get crossed off if they're stamped, and any tagalongs or random people who show up will get kicked out. that or just holding strong on a 40 max capacity or something. and actually KICKING PEOPLE OUT who show up in mobs for the said "big bands". I can't think of anything else to prevent giant crowds.
-better communication between troy and I, since he dismissed all my worries which started early on and didn't follow our house rules about cutting sets off and trying to speed things through so nobody starts after 9:30. there was a lot I was mad about and I mostly took it out on him. some was justified, some wasn't, but we still have a lot to talk about. troy didn't tell me that you warned him about it being brutal. he is not a worrier like me.
-if any of the bands have a decent sized following, there's no need for it to be a house show. someone has to book a community center or something. yeah, house shows are "more fun" but the bigger they are, the more it affects us
-coming prepared for all possibilities and enlisting help from you guys, our wonderful friends. if we need to make a decision to start kicking people out, we'll need help. I am not very commanding and the power-in-numbers thing helps. it would feel a lot easier if more people were down to enforce our rules. you're guests so it doesn't make sense to demand that. but my friend jordon was asking people to take shoes off and just getting laughed at. yeah.
-we used to sort of have a rule to stay on the deck if you're outside. don't know what happened to that but it should probably come back. we have a neighbour's house directly past the back fence and across from one side. the deck is sort of secluded and is next to a giant field. it did sound like a shouting match whenever I went outside. thanks for noticing that too ebony. I wish people would just stay inside and suffer the consequences. I mean, it's nice of us to even allow quiet people smoking and hanging out, right? I would like to to no ins and outs.
-again, kicking out anyone who isn't following rules. even if it's as stupid as some dude with giant boots who has been reminded two or three times to take them off.
we are into fostering a community but I hold limits. so if it's the same familiar faces (which isn't always true, that's a majority, who are the community, and they usually bring friends and some randoms come) then I'm cool with that. if it's not open enough like that, then yeah, we need a new venue, but I'm sticking to these rules. people might think these rules are oppressive and detrimental to the punk mindset. I just felt powerless in my own home at that last show and there's no way that's happening again.
thanks to people who are saying they'll get us another chair. I know it's just a chair and probably looked kind of crappy. it was also as old as I was, there are pictures of me as a little kid crawling all over it, it was given to me as part of a set by my family, and then it just got smashed apart. it's not like we were going to hide our chairs. I just have this weird guilt thing over it.

Re: Video From Last night
I think that's pretty fair Tyler.
Darcy, it's not fair to say "this is to be expected", especially when there have been multiple, multiple times when it has gone completely fine and no one has had any problems. It's dismissive and self-righteous, to be honest.
I think it boils down to Tyler's statement "Last night I felt powerless in my own house." That's probably the thing that's pissed him off the most, and I have to say he has every right to feel angry because of that.
