My take on it is that hardcore shouldn't be pretentious. It takes a lot to write intelligent lyrics (ie Trial) but it's really easy to front like an intellectual with opaque artsy lyrics about nothing (skrams wizards, I'm looking at you.) Furthermore, writing great songs but making it look easy and simple is a lot better than being unnecessarily complex. This is coming from someone who likes a lot of "interesting" bands, but I also like tons of great bands that a lot of people would probably call dumb. These days I'd rather listen to Floorpunch than some interesting band most of the time.
"We’ve been around longer than a minute and we’ve seen a thing or two. I’ve seen all of my peers and what they’re doing in a desperate attempt to convince themselves that they’re the coolest. And it really is quite a spectrum. Hardcore for Hardcore because there’s no way I could ever give a nasty fuck about what my peers are doing. Didn’t then and I don’t now. I think the best way I could “connect” with some of them is if I were to run them over with my car."

Then you'll go from being lonely to wishing that everybody would just fuck off because their a bunch of fucking buzzkills going on about how 'you've got a problem" and they "just want to be their to help you". You don't need any of them. You just need drugs.
So music should just stagnate? How is Touche Amore THAT different/pretentious? When I saw them live they dedicated songs to legalizing gay marriage, and were fairly left-winge outspoken hardcore dudes. Musically it's not like they're doing anything that I hear as super far reaching from something like Verse or "standard" hardcore. It's not like they claim influence from Minor Threat and end up sounding like Bleeding Through or something...
