I was in a sleep deprived food poisoning haze in the trunk of a van. during your set. friends insisted i stumble in and watch you play. really glad they did. your set was cool and a nice chain of pace from the usual types of bands on a hardcore festjoycecollingwood wrote:We love all the comments about our band! Regardless if you liked us, hated us or didn't care for us we just want to say THANKS so much to everyone in Victoria for inviting us to play there, we had the most amazing time at the Festival and met some great people, we can't wait to go back next year.
Human Demise, thanks for buying our patches, if you are in Vancouver e-mail us, we'll take you out!

Highlights:
Day One
Putrid Brew - need to play here more often, showed alot of improvement since last year from what I can recollect
Tempest - soo heavy, loud and epic, outspoken without being preachy. into it
Ill Intent - see above, Life of Agony cover was awesome
Horizons - definately one of my favs of this year
Crucified - holy shit, soo pissed
Withdrawl - one of my fav current hardcore bands, new lineup sounds great
Day Two
was pretty burnt out on music by day two, everything is pretty hazy, didnt watch many full sets
Damages - sounded awesome, I enjoyed them more at the troyler though, possibly because of said burn out
Tounge Tied - stoked to see hunter speaking his mind, too much incense made me sneezy
Make Do and Mend - had to leave to catch the bus a little bit into their set, was very stoked on what I saw of it though

hahahaha what did young oppression do generate all the like? we played with them in Kamloops and they were seriously one of the coolest bands i've seen all tour and were awesome kids who got stoned with us and were generally tons of fun... bummer things didn't go well with them at the fest. anyway sorry for missing this but I was playing a (surprisingly) rad show in Windsor, Ontario at some shitty punk bar with a rad noise/grind band from London called Disleksick who ripped it up hard. glad to hear people enjoyed themselves.

You missed a hell of a year, dude. Super fun. I hope your tour is going well. I'll fill you in on the details of the whole YO fiasco later.

Highlight for me was getting to see all the cool Vic people again. Wish there was more time to hang out, talk and bro down, but that's the nature of traveling to play I guess. I really like Victoria. Wish I was present for day one. I'm certain No Eulogy, Cold Craving and Tempest rocked the house.
I think Victim's Choice have greatly upped their sound since I first saw them. They were the band I was most stoked on on day two. Looking forward to what's to come from them.
Sorry to say I missed the first half of Promises set because I naively assumed I'd have time to run to the store and back before Young Oppression finished. What i did see I was real amped on. This bands need to start playing in Van, and soon.
As always Tongue Tied delivered. I like what Hunter has to say between songs and within them, he comes across as thoughtful and genuine, and the band backs it up with the music they make.

i wasn't there on day two, but this is what i caught on day one.
No Eulogy: Willa's best band so far. it pains me that they're stuck on an island.
AK47: i would like this band even if jodi wasn't in them.
Still Fighting: riley. funny guy. and his band has greatly improved since i saw them in winnipeg two years ago.
Still Birth: didn't know what to expect. i actually can't really remember what they sounded like, but i liked it.
Compound Terror: i know nothing about this type of music, but this set was cool.
Crucified: seeing the place not go completely crazy for this band was weird. although i guess the place went sort of crazy.
Putrid Brew: my favourite bc band. i like what lindsay has to say. he's fucking real.
Withdrawal: my favourite canadian band. relatively low key set.
Tempest: my favourite set of the day. the second guitarist makes a huge difference.
Persistence of Time: pretty sure isaiah didn't say anything offensive during our set this time. so... uhh... that's nice.
anyone have videos of tongue tied?

No Eulogy: solid, i was pretty tired but i remember digging the tunes
White Ribs: yes.yes.yes.yes.yes. i was beyond stoked for ribs and they dind't let me down. 3 one g with rock n' roll vibes. i'm not sure if thats validated by anything. it just felt locusty, but with more riffing than noodling
Joyce Collingwood: not that into it, but they played hard
Putrid Brew: heaps of props to their guitar player with the odb memorial tattoo
Persistence of Time: dug it. not usually into the whole integrity metallic hardcore but they pulled it off nicely. it sounds shallow, but i thought the diversity of people in the band was cool too
Still Fighting: singer was tonnes of fun to watch and super intense. first and only sight of blood for the day. music didn't really grab me though.
Still Birth: veggie calzone break. regret it.
Substance: n/a
Blackwater: this band killed it! loved their set. very intense. sweet dudes, too. and their merch was tight and cheap as free!
Compound Terror: their set seemed too long, but i dug the first 3 songs
Tempest: these guys brought their a-game. bong conquered that fucked up guitar strap like a champion. moshed for the first time at a tempest show as well
Horizons: forget who these guys were...
Cold Craving: blew me away. beautiful guitar set-ups and their singer had the best voice of the whole festival. 4 part scream harmonies always win me over, too
Voices: everyone i spoke to seemed to think these guys were better than cold craving. i disagree. good band though.
AK47: i had to dipset again for food and only caught the last couple songs. regret it harsh. i can't belive how strong their singers voice still is and their second guitarist was bouncing around all pissed off with more scincerity than i've seen from kids half his age. i think because of how short their set was to me i didn't catch on to how much of a drag their bassist seemed to be to everyone
Ill Intent: meh
Crucified: alright
Withdrawal: i was pretty tired by this point, not really listening
Donnybrook!: i'd left and gone to bed
Day 2
Victims Choice: i really dug this. the last original song especially. they reminded me of old videos of spazz playing live.
Young Oppression: they had alot of energy, but they came off as dicks
Sabertooth: more like SLAYbertooth.
Fear of Tomorrow: not my thing
Tongue Tied: best set i've seen from these guys, and i've been to every show (sans one and a house show i didn't know about). good use of razmataz
On Call Heroes: not my kindof thing, but i hear their nice dudes. i went to get some fresh air and an ear break during their set
Promises: their lead singer looks just like my uncle dave, and their guitarist is a sweetie. awsome tunes, too
Damages: these guys always kill it, but the born against cover and the energetic crowd just made it that much better
Everyone Everywhere: babysitting tounge tieds merch, so i didn't get to watch. sounded solid though
Make Do and Mend: catchy as balls, added some more diversity
Slingshot: PILESUP. PILEUPSPILEUPS
Shook Ones: set had to get cut short but whatr' ya gonna do? awsome nonetheless, wish i wasn't so wiped out by slingshots set
first vihc fest was rad. so many good times and even better people

Re: VIHC FEST BAND CRITIQUES post yerz
No Eulogy: ugh moving drumkit, and playing in a big room with amps right against my ears. Was hard to get into because it just sounded so fucking weird to me. Otherwise I had fun and was very fucking stoked to play.
White Ribs: I love this fucking band. The drummer is a trip to watch.
Joyce Collingwood: Very fun band. Great vocals, fun energy. Hahahah good luck goading people into moving. Its like a dance club, everyone in town has to be drunk before they start moving.
Putrid Brew: I was really looking forward to this band based on last year, it was a shame they had to open last time. Heavy as fuck. Their hype crew were bringing it.
Persistence of Time: Good dudes, and good times. I wish more bands like this played victoria.
Still Birth: Definitely one of my highlights. Fast as fuck!
Still Fighting: Same drummer, this style seemed to be a bit less comfortable for him but maybe that's just me. Wasn't as into it .. their singer's face was gnarly. I thought he'd had the shit beat out of him .. turns out he does that to himself? yikes.
Black Water: No recollection of this band.
Compound Terror: I got confused and played too long by accident. Drumming is hard. Felt like I was having a stroke. Kevin fucked up on guitar. lolz.
Tempest: Awesome! Can't wait to see these guys at the troyler. Loudest band of the fest by a longshot.
Horizons: These guys were so drunk, but still awesome. LOL.
Cold Craving: Unbelievable. New favourite band.I knew I was in for something good when I saw the enslaved - frost shirt.
Voices: NOT better than cold craving.
AK47:ahahahahah yeah bassist, total drag. lol. band has toned down its commie vibe, as I have looked over the lyrics on the new one. The CD wasn't as fast as I hoped. Live, they are sounding good.
Ill Intent: These guys were fucking awesome. Good start to the tough-guy end-show bomb blast.
Crucified: Loved the stripped down minimalist drumming and riffage.
Withdrawal: Also really liked these guys, but I'm starting to fade because I haven't eaten since 9am.
Donnybrook!: Enjoyed the shit out of these guys. Wasn't really more than familiar with them in passing, but when I checked them out pre-fest I knew I would like it. Also had fun partying with them after the show at the (formerly known as) AIDS house. Weird ass party.
Day 2
Victims Choice: These guys and girl fucking rule. Very stoked to have these guys as locals and getting to see them semi-often.
Young Oppression: I was bummed the singer turned out to be such a fucking asshole, as I was enjoying their tunes. I wouldn't let their loudmouth singer speak for the whole band, but I suppose that's kind of what a singer does.
Sabertooth: Yep, this was awesome. Good sound, fun tunes. High energy fastness.
Fear of Tomorrow: Fucking LOVE this shit. Adopted these guys and they crashed my house after the fest. Old friends of mine. D-beat odyssey.
Tongue Tied: Fuck yeah hardcore. This fest rules. This band rules.
On Call Heroes: Good at what they do I guess, but I'm not even into this music enough to know.
Promises: These guys and victim's choice. Yep. Victoria!
Damages:This band is incredible. So fucking heavy. Ugh. Their drummer makes me want to quit trying.
Everyone Everywhere: Did realize who the singer was. Totally nice, positive dude and he definitely knows how to sing. Again, so far from my tastes I have no idea if this is good or not.
Make Do and Mend: I thought I would like these guys but fucking LOVED THEM. Incredible. I'm glad I didn't pull a "Fucked Up" and just stand outside grumbling about them. Unbelievable. Had this .. I don't know, melancholy vibe to them.
Slingshot: Holy damn people like this band. These guys are closer to the kind of "pop-punk" I like, ala NOFX. Just watching the crowd on this one was entertaining.
Shook Ones: Again, people were really fucking into this. They were pretty good, but not really my thing.
White Ribs: I love this fucking band. The drummer is a trip to watch.

This entire critique is why you are one of my favorite people.
ZACH ATTACK wrote:Do drugs. Lots and lots of drugs. The harder the better. Then you'll go from being lonely to wishing that everybody would just fuck off because their a bunch of fucking buzzkills going on about how 'you've got a problem" and they "just want to be their to help you". You don't need any of them. You just need drugs.
