VIHC Society

Post by Andrew »

What does the VIHC Society do besides the VIHC Fest each year? Is it made to facilitate the fest, or other things too?

I'd like the $2 tour of what the VIHC Society does/is about, please.

Our mandate is to create safe and inclusive spaces for all ages punk show and to educate the public at large on the importance of DIY hardcore culture in Victoria and the world over. This means a lot of different things but it mostly means that we book shows, find venues, help out other promoters and bands trying to book shows in town, and generally up the punx. We aslo need more members to keep these sorts of things going. In the immortal words of Keith:
its getting pretty dire in victoria at this point, we gotta man up
We had a sign up sheet at the fest and it was a little disapointing how few people joined, but I'm ging to give everybody the benifit of the doubt and assume they didn't see it and that's why they didn't sign up. It's not too late though. Anybody who likes going to shows in Victoria or had a good time at the fest has a vested interest in joining. It's free to join and all we'll ask of anybody is to come to one meeting once a year where we'll probably feed you for free. If anybody wants to do more obviously they are more than welcome to as well. Anybody interested in joining should get in touch with Ebony and she'll tell you what info she needs from you. Any info we gather won't be seen by anybody us, and just for clerical purposes.
The past year was an amazfng one for VIHC, let's all try to make the next one even better. We have a lot of really exciting projects planned (opening an indipendant all ages venue in Victoria), but we wont be able to do anything if we don't have enough peole at our Annual General Meeting and lose our society/non profit status. So if you haven't joined yet, do it. You have absolutley nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Not that I'd be signing up for VIHC Society (given I don't live on VI), but I didn't see the sheet anywhere on day two, so you're probably right about people not seeing it.

That's really cool.

Has the idea of VIHC Society having an arm for releasing records ever been considered? I remember years ago when Wade was doing Slow To Burn out of Vic and it was a wonderful vehicle to document the bands in Victoria. Besides documenting, it also translated the unity of the Vic scene to outsiders and made the Vic scene appear really strong. It seemed to me like this made playing in Vic more attractive to out of town bands because people in other parts of the world were hearing records from Vic bands and wanted to see for themselves what was happening there. In short, when it came to BC, Victoria was the shit.
No one ever stepped in to fill Slow To Burn's shoes when Wade moved away.

I'm sure (like most things) it'd be a money issue.

you know, vihc society should put out a van isle hardcore comp 7". no eulogy, promises, white ribs, ak47? or something? maybe someone who does decent recordings could do it for free, then it would only take some thriftiness to do it cheaply (master at aardvark or something, go through the pressing plant and NOT a broker like pirates press or whatever that dude on the island is, find some cheap hookup for packaging in victoria or just order from bagsunlimited in bulk). the whole project would cost as much as what you guys paid some of the bands at the fest. I VOLUNTEER TO HELP WITH ART OR COMMUNICATION WITH THE PLANT OR SOMETHING.

Our first release is going to be a comp of Van Isle bands. A lot of bands have said their down, so pretty soon it's going to get more serious and go from the "awesome idea" phase to the "LETS FUCKING DO THIS!!!!" phase. Bands get at me!
Unfortunatly records seem too expensive at this point so it will probably be on tape, unless somebody want's to step up our gwop game (i.e. put down some money to help press records.) But this way, since they'll be on tape we'll be able to put more bands on it, which is absolutely a good thing.

If you know where I can get records pressed cheaply, point me in the right direction.

The VIHC society as Zach has so eloquently put it is just that, and we're pretty awesome.

We are comprised of 6 members.

President - troy lemberg

Treasurer - Willa simpson

Secretary - Ebony Aitken

Board of directors

- scott browne
-zach greene
-paul smith

Our AGM will afford every member who nsigns up a chance to vote and discuss all things relating to the hardcore scene in victoria and the upcoming VIHC Fest 7!

We had 10 people sign up at the fest.

On both days it was located prominantly on the VIHC society merch & info table.

All the info and such will be again set up at the Ghostlimb show at the legndary castle & at the upcoming Sept 9th Comeback Kid perfrmance

Up the punx

Does The ViHC Society's non profit status qualify a donator to a tax deduction?

We made announcements a few times each day and it was prominantly on the table, ill have the sign up sheet at troyler show -

A far as donations and tax purposes, id imagine it is seen as a charitable donation, we have a legit account and reciept book.

To become a member of the society NO donation or FEE is required, just your participation!

We really need to look into this as there were some people that said they would donate $500 a year cause they donate that much a year for taxes.

hmm
