Yeah, they were a part of that wave of Christcore that popped up in the late 90's and early 2000's. Weird fuckin' time, man. I remember going to see Shockwave in 2003 and this band started babbling about Jesus on stage, and everyone was cheering. I felt...awkward.

Also, you should dress like an uber scene kid for the interview, and video tape it. I'm talking skin tight pants, hilarious shirt (possibly with Hello Kitty on it), and makeup.

What's so weird about that? No different than when bands preach about being straight edge, or equal rights, or whatever. Just something they believe in. I think Christianity is pretty bonkers but I have no problem with a band expressing something they believe in. My two favorite hardcore (or whatever stupid sub class/genre they fall into) bands are christian, whatever.

Well hardcore and/or metal didn't exactly embrace Christianity from it's inception. That's why I find it kind of stupid that we have bands playing super aggressive music that has it's roots in being fairly antichristian, who are screaming about finding salvation through Christ.

Christian punk/ metal makes about as much sense as nazi reggae. I don't care about anybody's religious affiliations, but I think it's lame when anybody co-opts a movement and throws out it's ideals to push their own agenda.

This. I get what you're saying Peter, but for me Christianity and hardcore/metal/whatever don't mix. Straightedge is different because it's a philosophical model with it's roots in hardcore. Christian hardcore was created solely as a method of proselytizing to punk rock kids. Even the few bands that merely started as "hardcore as done by Christian kids" moved fairly quickly towards "Christians doing hardcore" (which could also be the title of a pretty awesome porn). This is exactly what happened with Zao.

But I see it as the same thing, really. Does it matter where it started? It's not like Anarchism was born in Punk Rock, nor was veganism started in Hardcore. I think Hardcore, along with any form of music for that matter, is about expressing how you feel, who you are, and what you believe. That's one of the things I really respect about Hardcore is its' ability NOT to shy away from life style choices. It's supposed to be open to all things--white/black, straight/gay, drinker/non drinker, ect ect. And I think if a band wants to sing...or scream...about how God has saved them and the power of Christ, than they should be allowed to, and not looked down on because of it.

But veganism, anarchism, and hardcore are all reactions against Judeo-Christian values.

As well, maybe I should point out that a lot of the Christian hardcore bands out there are fully funded by huge mega-churches that are trying to push a very specific agenda, and one that I find counter-productive to the very "live and let live" philosophy of hardcore. This is a message that is anti-gay, anti-Islam, pro-life and generally socially conservative as fuck. This is an incredibly co-opted sub-genre we're speaking of here. If a band is simply a bunch of kids talkin' about Jesus, while I'll almost certainly disagree with them I won't begrudge them the right to exist (see: Figure Four). However 90% of the Christcore bands I see are simply mouthpieces for generally fucked individuals/groups of people (I'm pretty sure Focus on the Family funds several of these bands. I can't back that up, though). And, to put this in perspective, I feel just as strong about most Taquacore/Krishnacore/Jewcore.

I should also point out that there are exceptions to every rule. Figure Four, again, is an excellent band. Zao's first album is great. 108 has yet to put out something I've fully disliked. I won't ever see any of these bands live or buy any of their albums (full disclosure: I saw Figure Four live once. Heavy. At the timeI had no idea they were Christcore). It just goes against my personal politics far, far too much. In Chicago, I went for lunch during 108's set. I heard it was fantastic and I don't doubt it. No regrets.
