Good call on switching to an independent ISP. Think we may have to do the same.

Scott, of course it's a first world problem. We live in the first world. That's pretty much the only problems we have. DURR. Plus, considering how important the internet has been to the Egyptian protesters, I'd say that an open internet is probably one of the most important tools any people can have.

Also, I'm not sure that I would consider allowing large corporations to stifle access to information and communication a "first world problem." Maybe if the internet and all the information available on it hadn't proliferated the way it has I'd agree, but we don't live in that parallel universe. The fact of the matter is that the internet is one of the last accessible means of independent information, free of corporate and government white washing. When I was kid before, we got the internet, we got two newspapers (one national and one local) and thats where we got our news from. If we wanted a different perspective we could watch the 6 o'clock news on TV. Now I can check the CBC news to see what's going on in the world, then check Al Jazeera for their take on it, then check the BBC, then the Russian service and so on and so forth. Most might only use it to check Perez Hilton and watch the Jersey Shore, but there's really no denying that we have much more informed populace now as a result of internet proliferation and the information it makes available. Plus it's got TONS of porn.

Oh, no not really. This is basically how it goes at band practice, too. Someone says something, half of us disagree with it, then we argue over it for twenty minutes, then we play music. Then it turns out that none of us really gave a damn.

the part about changing to an independent provider is interesting. they're right, independent providers are way cheaper. I think that if I move out, rather than using shaw again, I'll try to sign up with an independent ISP. they seem pretty cheap from first glance.
independents will NOT be cheaper if ubb goes through since independents get their internet FROM big companies like shaw and rogers and bell but at a forced lower rate, which thus, allows the independents to charge less.

that wasn't really my point. but as it stands right now, these independent ones provide more bandwidth for less money since I guess there's some rule where the big ones have to lease out access to encourage competition. I really don't think metering is going to go through but it'll be great to stick it to shaw after this whole thing blows over.
