The Trap: What Happened to Our Dreams of Freedom by Adam Curtis. The series consists of three one-hour programmes which explore the concept and definition of freedom, specifically, “how a simplistic model of human beings as self-seeking, almost robotic, creatures led to today’s idea of freedom.”

watched one of the three so far, definitely worth it. I like that it's a little more rational than, say, a michael moore documentary. the direction the narrative takes, exploring game theory, the cold war, families, individualism, psychiatry, etc. this kind of thing always bums me out though. I feel like it makes more obvious the blatant wrongs of society that we take for granted. the diamond/cash game was interesting. I do think people act out of self-interest. I'd like to think that human interaction has some level of emotional impulse response that's beyond the cold calculations that they discuss, and that impulse decisions or "bad moves" form some sort of foundation for altruistic behaviour. there are a lot of topics and implications that can be approached as branching from what it discusses. I don't think I want to bring a lot of them up.

really liked the focus on the Rosenhan experiments - this is the only documentary I've found that talks about them a lot. I wish that there was a docu focused primarily on them, and corruption in psych wards in general. not corruption, mostly assumption really. you know what I mean.
