When I was in grade 11 my highschool got rid of their beautiful old double bass that I was completly in love with to replace it with a new electric upright. It was still fun enough to play but no matter what I did to it still sounded completley soulless. And then my music teacher started ragging on me to play with more soul. It was like he just didn't understand that you can't just tweak some knobs and get the same noises that you can out of an old worked in instrument. Absolutely, that much air vibrating inside that big body makes a huge difference to the feel of playing a proper upright bass vs. an electric.
