Now that I found my bass, I'm wanting to try and do something more difficult... Find an old school tube Sunn bass head for cheap.
If anybody hears anything about one, give me a shout!

I think one of those guys in nick's friend's band (fuji hakamoto or something) used a sunn coliseum and it sounded killer

I played the dude from Jaws' Sunn head through an Ampeg 8x10 in a kitchen in Van when we played with them and Gravemaker. It was the best sounding amp I've ever played. He said he bought it for 200 bucks, it was a honkin tube thing, but I can't seem to find one on google images or ebay that looks like it...

Doesn't he use a Sunn 300T?

http://www.thevintagesound.com/ffg/sunn_300t.html

That's what he has in Congress, I'd guess it's the same amp.

They're fairly new amps from when Fender revived the Sunn brand in the 90's. They did blow them out for cheap when they discontinued the Sunn brand again, but $200 is a smoking deal for any Sunn amp.

FYI, Fender still makes the same all tube bass amp, they just rebranded it the Fender Bassman 300pro. Identical amp other than one having a sunn badge and one having a Fender badge.

If that is the amp you're thinking of, you can get a tube and solid state version. The solid state version is the 1200s. Both use the exact same preamp with a different power section. I think both sound very cool, but kinda prefer the solid state version. When Scotty played bass in Tempest he used the solid state version of this amp. They have a real cool midrange growl to them.

You're the man, Andrew!!! There's a couple 1200s's on craigslist in Vancouver... I think I need to sell my other gear first though... I was looking at Markbass stuff today at L&M, the cabs are expensive, but they have the little mark tube for about 700 iirc. so, guess I should sell my GK stuff then decide between Sunn or Markbass. Whole new rig!

I'm not sure, but I think one of the Sunn 1200s on Van CL is Scotty from Tempest's amp. I know he's trying to sell his bass and a 1200s popped up the same time as his bass went on CL and he told me he's done playing bass in bands for a while, so...

Damn, $50 more than the Jaws dude bought his amp for!

you'll be lucky to find one for cheap now. they have a cult following of people that have never used/heard them so the price has gone way up.

Yeah, it's looking like it would be the same price as buying a markbass hybrid head, and I'd probably have to get it from at least Van. We'll see...

Acoustic Control Corp! as used by Stop It!!! and Jaco.

or look for 60's Ampeg Fliptop.

I'm actually thinking of going hybrid. I tried a Gallien-Krueger Fusion 550 at L&M and it sounded AWESOME.

That amp does sound really good.

Check out the Orange TerrorBass too. It has the same pre as the AD200, but a 500 watt ss power section and is cased in the same little headbox as the Tiny Terror guitar amp. I guess they have a 1,000 watt version coming out too.

You should also think about trying the Tech 21 VT Bass pedal with your P-Bass and G-K head. Really good sounding combo to my ears.

I don't think I want to buy anything more powerful than my GK (700+50 solidstate) as I'll never need more than that (another deterrent to buying Sunn heads)

That Tech 21 looks really rad, I'm totally gonna go down to L&M to see if I can try one out, the Orange head too if they have 'em. You're the best, Andrew!

I remember this show. You and Jordan V. beat me up and "stole my soul"... good times.

Now I wanna do what Colin Stewart did and just run a Sansamp through a power amp then an 8x10... Too much gear, too little time. I'm gonna go into L&M next week and hope I can try one out!
