In the esoteric world of watchmaking, Devon Works watches are a small part of a niche segment of the watch collecting market. Why? Its unique timepieces are not powered by a quartz or mechanical movement; instead, they are powered by electronic motors that receive energy from a rechargeable battery, similar to how smartwatches work, but not quite.
This watch was originally released in 2015's The Force Awakens, but is still available from Devon Works and various pre-owned watch dealers. The 316L stainless steel case measuring 66.3mm in length, 22.1mm in thickness and 61.2mm in width - properly treated with a true black DLC coating - makes its presence known. Instead of a sapphire crystal, the watch has a scratch-resistant polycarbonate lens with so-called "bulletproof" durability.
The movement features four interwoven 2-micron thin nylon timing bands, driven by four micro-stepper motors controlled by temperature-compensated crystals and an on-board microprocessor.
This unique system moves four intersecting straps on the dial to display the hours, minutes and seconds – accurate to half a second per day. While the watch is not as accurate as most quartz watches, it is as accurate as the most precise mechanical timepieces, if not more accurate.
Powering this high-tech timer is a lithium-polymer rechargeable battery that lasts for two weeks on a single charge and charges wirelessly via an inductive charging tower.
The movement features multiple optical identification units and lubrication-free ruby bearings, as well as 313 electrical contacts for a total of 350 components.
When designing Star Wars Devon, Scott Devon said: "We knew right away that we had to incorporate Darth Vader into the design. Not only is he one of the most iconic characters in Star Wars, but he also represents people and the Impressive display of machine interaction," adds Devon, who developed the watch in collaboration with his in-house designer Marko Petrovic. “Marko had seen the Star Wars movies a hundred times before I brought him the concept of the watch. He finished the design in a week.”

This is an officially licensed Star Wars product, so the design naturally took elements from the movie. The TIE Fighter is one of the starships of the Imperial Fleet, and its wings are designed as part of the chassis structure, which is also included in the display stand. The main screws connecting the case to the lugs are reinterpreted as aircraft turbine air intakes, and decorated with pointed silver screws that mimic those on Darth Vader's helmet. In addition, the crown is adorned with the emblem of the Galactic Empire.
Small details like the belt system pay homage to Star Wars and are finished in red and green to reflect Darth Vader's center console details. A central hexagonal disc with the TIE Fighter inscription further adds to the theme.
