I watched Sherlock Holmes last night, and while it wasn't 10,000% horse shit...what exactly made this movie a Sherlock Holmes movie? I didn't really feel as if it had anything to do with the Sherlock Holmes character whatsoever. They could have called it MYSTERY IN YE OLDE EMPIRE OF THE QUEEN. That whole Moriarty crap felt so tagged on throughout the film. However, even though I really can't stand this renaissance of Robert Downey Jr., he wasn't THAT bad with the British accent and all. Still, why was this movie even related to the novels?

It's part of the Hollywood trend to "modernize" a classic story. What makes a story a classic is it's need to be modernized.

One spin on the Sherlock Holmes character also unrelated to the books that i enjoyed is Young Sherlock Holmes. Loved that movie as a kid, so I overlook it's shortcomings now.

I didn't feel that it was modernized, but felt like they took too many liberties. Maybe it has something to do with Guy Ritchie doing it, who has been solid up until that Rocka Rolla movie that came out. That Young Sherlock Holmes show was great though, I haven't seen it in ages but it had the vibe down better as I can remember.

Sorry, I guess by modernized I didn't mean present day, but the liberties with the story current to todays movie story telling, like making Holmes a pit fighter who knew martial arts.

Are you referring to the movie Young Sherlock Holmes, or the TV series? I mean the movie, but there was both, wasn't there?

Nick, can I ask why you felt that why specifically? Cause from having read the Holmes stories many times, this is not only a pretty spot on depiction of him, the story itself only felt the tiniest bit modernized in pacing, but not in content.

I watched it when it was originally on TV. It's been long enough now that I think I'll put it on my list of shows to watch and watch it again.

If you havn't watched it, I recommend Deadwood. Just finished the first season and it was really good as well.

Anyone here watch Madmen? New season started on Sunday.

I felt it lacked the atmosphere necessary for what era it was set in, and was a little too "The Extraordinary League of Gentlemen" in it's approach. Needed to be more of a "From Hell" vibe. The story too just felt too action oriented. When I think of Sherlock Holmes, I get more of a cinema noir script, and WAY more dialogue. I went in expecting an intelligent film, similar to the personality of Sherlock Holmes, but got the UFC version instead. It just felt as if someone outlined the character sketches of Sherlock Holmes and Watson, sans the time frame/stories they were in, then whipped together a storyline that I thought sucked (come on, CONTROL THE WORLD OMG get the fuck out). I don't want Sherlock Holmes being this pseudo-super hero. He's a detective, detecting shit.

I heard that Deadwood was good, I want to start watching that and Breaking Bad.

I watched some of season 1 of Madmen, but I loose touch with tv shows because I never remember to be home for them.
