American Hardcore dvd is $6 at HMV

...in Mayfair, at least. in the "General Interest" section. I bought one cause, why not, it's $6 and I'm sure I'll watch it again at least once.

The book is worth picking up. Same HARDCORE IS DEAD HERES HOW IT WAS sediment is still there, but with lots of old flyers and cool story. Of course glorified, but ask me about hardcore 5 years ago and I will glorify it because thats when hardcore was the only thing I cared about.

Yeah, Zach and I were talking about that movie once and both agreed we hated it because it was basically "Hardcore was around until '85, then Ian Mackaye dropped out so now it's dead". Kinda pissed me off.

Heard the book was pretty dope, though.

what pissed me off is that dude from the circle jerks yelling HARDCORE IS DEAD GET OVER IT! and at the time were touring a scab reunion.

Yeah, pretty much the only guy who was doing that who got a pass was the dude from GWAR who almost immediately after saying that laughed and said "Of course, i'm only pissed off cuz all these kids are still going out and having way more fun that I am". Which is pretty much exactly what it was.

who cares about the author's/director's sentiments? I disagree with them too but I'm still down for seeing some of my favourite past bands in something other than youtube

I do. They colour and shape how a movie/book looks, and colour and shape how those who read/watch them feel about the subject matter. I'm just of the opinion that if you're going to make a documentary, you need to show as many sides of the story as possible, and American Hardcore failed pretty miserably at that. It was just a bunch of old guys bitching and moaning about how great it was back in the day. Nothing we can do will ever be good enough, and I'm honestly sick of that shit. We have taken hardcore so much farther, and in so much more positive directions than those guys ever did, and honestly it pisses them off. With a few exceptions (Ian Mackaye, Henry Rollins, John Josephs) most of those guys sold-out and became what they like and that drives them up the wall. So fuck that movie.

Not to mention they only really covered the most obvious bands and bareley even recognozied the existence of scores of bands that made immesurable contibutions to hardcore. I like everything about this movie.

Yes, the movie was flawed...but what do you expect from a movie like this??? Important bands were missed because of legal issues or ego...and hundred of smaller bands that are important to somebody were ignored....but to properly do the subject justice, it would have been a ten part mini-series. The book was better, but also flawed. Really...what bands did they really need to cover that they skipped over entirely???

As far as the whole "Hardcore Is Dead" sentiment...that pissed me off at first too...but you gotta look at if from their point of view. I was around in the late 80's and hardcore WAS essentially dead. I wnet to my first punk show in 1985, and really started buying hardcore records in early 1986. Things had changed in alot of ways. I was hearing about all the killer shows that had happened over the past few years...but there was very little happening then. Smaller bands weren't touring anymore...and the bigger bands had all changed their sound. I was buying early 80's hardcore records and going nuts over them, but ended up reallt dissapointed when the bands came back to town. I went to see 7 seconds expecting to hear "The Crew" and they were touring "New Wind"...I went to see The Circle jerks hoping for "Group Sex" and they were playing "Wonderful"...Agent Orange was doing "This Is The Voice"...Gang Green was doing "You Got It"...DOA was doing "Let's Wreck The Party", and everyone else was playing metal and hard rock. Local bands in every town were doing the same...either doing REM and U2 styled "college rock" or going metal. Hardcore WAS dead! There were very few people who held out and played hardcore throughout the late 80's...and the problem with alot of the old guard is that they abandoned the genre totally until the last few years when they've refound it as a last gasp at their youth or to make a couple bucks.

Was hardcore better then? Is it better now? No...on both counts. There are still hardcore-punk bands playing shit that is as good or better than most of the shit that came out in the 80's...and then there is what "you kids" call hardcore these days, which is an evolved and refined genre. I was kinda pissed hwne I left the theatre after watching "American hardcore", but I watched it again a couple weeks ago, and it's not that bad of a film....worth 46 for sure just for Rollins punching that kid in the head.
