People who overdo it can be off putting.
I actually actively despise the concept of "political correctness". Since the subject has been brought up, imma gonna rant on that shit for a bit. Fair warning, lots of what Bong refers to as "blah blah blah old man blah blah blah anarchy" ahead. Skip it if you're not in the mood.
First, let me be upfront about my hypocrisy: I like certain words, and the use thereof. I'm sure you can figure out which words those are. I find homophobia, racism, or any other kind of bigotry seriously shitty and off putting. People who use the f-bomb around me too much will notice I generally leave the conversation after a few moments. I just don't want to be around that shit.
But I also like "PC" and PC culture. What they're fighting against isn't like or ignorance, but the
word. To them, if you use the word "black" instead of "African American", that's at the very least racially insensitive. What they don't take into account is the fact that the word itself is not where like originates from. To wit; "All blacks are thieves." vs. "It's sad how African Americans can't seem to get themselves out of the ghetto". Both say basically the same thing, both are racist, one of them is written PC.
Basically, the only thing the PC movement ever really accomplished was to raise an entire generation of racists who learned how to speak in code.
I do think that words mean something, and that words can seriously hurt someone. But I also think context is just as (if not more so) important. When John makes fun of me for being a jew, or I make fun of him for being gay, there's no like there despite the fact that the language used gets pretty raw. If I were walking down the street and some guy started calling me a kike I'd probably deck him. Different situations call for different reactions, and political correctness is just too narrow a definition of what is and isn't appropriate.
As per usual, everything in here is just an opinion.
