I'm not interested in hearing scene drama, I was confused as to how it would impede potential fund raising. I'm told it won't so that's that.Human-Demise wrote:its not my place to discuss it I'm sure someone closer to the whole thing could enlighten you. suffice to say: drama.Andrew wrote:Huh?Human-Demise wrote:I'm unsure of how things are with the whole kenny, no eulogy thing

anyways pauly's right though there has been a drop in turnout all across the scene, I was just basing my suggestion of unicron at the last show i saw them play (that one tyler posted a bunch of pictures from) and that I thought that had a decent turn out, but i was not at cbfest and from what it sounds like that didnt have to great a turn out.
kids suck, why wouldn't you want to see bands live. kids are dumb is my guess.

tieman does screen printing to.
uh, not sure if theres any other independent screeners out here.
I have a question too, how do the bar shows here do money wise.

Re: POST-VIHC FEST 7 FUNDRAISING IDEAS
If you've got any capable screen printing people willing to donate their time, why not do a run of limited edition screen printed posters?
Andrew Benson (guy who sings in Book Of Caverns and does a ton of artwork and design for AB hc bands/Bart Records/etc.) has been doing beautiful hand screened posters and selling them.

I like andrews idea about selling prints. I'd be down for that.

Re: POST-VIHC FEST 7 FUNDRAISING IDEAS
there are VIHC/Fest posters and shirts already. I'm not big on the artist's style but that's just personal taste I guess.

Re: POST-VIHC FEST 7 FUNDRAISING IDEAS
I wouldn't suggest VIHC themed designs, that's limited in it's audience. But I think if you put up a website and had unique, well designed limited prints for bands you could sell a few.tylerp wrote:there are VIHC/Fest posters and shirts already. The key is you need to have someone who's good at screening and someone good at design who will volunteer their time, otherwise you'll probably lose more money than you make.
Alexis, if you want to look into this idea more pm me and I'll put you in touch with Andrew Benson and you can see what he's doing and decide if it's feasible.

Re: POST-VIHC FEST 7 FUNDRAISING IDEAS
sucks about you guys losing all that money on the fest, but honestly there were too many out of town bands and ticket prices were too expensive, a lot of people i talked to were not prepared to shell out $30 to see a bunch of hardcore bands they've never heard of, i'm sure at least a few of the bands got totally missed out on even by the people who were there just due to there being such an overwhelming number of out of towners to see... make the fest one day, keep it to a few out of towners people here are actually excited for and keep the ticket prices more reasonable and i think it will be a bigger success... that's just my opinion and by no means do i intend to belittle all the hard work i know you guys put into this every year. i want to see hardcore fest succeed and not lose a ton of money so there's my hopefully constructive input. also Comeback Kid is absolutely not a "hype" band, maybe they were five/six years ago, 180 kids at an all-ages hardcore show in victoria is a great turnout under any circumstances, this place does still have the potential for amazing all-ages shows but it's definitely getting tougher and tougher... an affordable venue would be a huge step in the right direction.

30 bucks for a 2 day fest full of out of towners is not too expensive. especially if you have the internet like 90% of people do now. If you haven't heard of a band, why not check them out on the internet since you had over a month of notice for who was playing with links to each band, just waiting for you to click on it and give the band 5 minutes of your time?
You'll(anyone that drinks) pay that for a 26 of any booze you're going to drink but not to see 15 bands live, in person that took the time to come to your city?
It costs 10-12 bucks to get a ticket to see a movie in a theater. 10 bucks for popcorn and a drink. it costs 12 bucks to get a meal from a fast food place. people need to re-evaluate the world they live in. 15 - 20 years ago i could watch a show with an out of town band for 4 bucks. it's more expensive now because everything costs more and everyone is losing money because no one comes out. The scene has changed for the worse.

I'm not asking anyone to divulge numbers, but I'll say too that without knowing how much money you need to recoup and how quickly you need to recoup it, a lot of these ideas will seem pointless to help. But that's fine, I'll just throw whatever ideas come to mind and if one fits the criteria needed to help you out, then great.
Until then, forgive me if some of my current/future suggestions completely miss the mark.

Your logic isn't wrong, but you have to realize that for a lot of kids hc and live music aren't a priority in their lives and to them buying beer/going to the movies/etc. is more important. It's flawed logic to me too, but to a lot of young people it unfortunately makes sense to pay $30 for beer but not for a DIY style hc fest.Crucified wrote: 30 bucks for a 2 day fest full of out of towners is not too expensive. especially if you have the internet like 90% of people do now. agreed. shit's changed since i was young. I had to borrow money to go see shows. i would hang out in grocery store parking lots and take carts back and shit to get enough money to go to the ones i couldn't afford. no joke. whatever it took back then. now kids have the money but no motivation. is that the music, the shows or the kids? who knows?Andrew wrote:Your logic isn't wrong, but you have to realize that for a lot of kids hc and live music aren't a priority in their lives and to them buying beer/going to the movies/etc. is more important. I don't think much has changed. I'm sure the majority of kids going to the shows at that time were the same as today. How many of them worked as hard as you did to go to those shows and how many are still involved today?Crucified wrote:agreed. shit's changed since i was young. HC and punk has always moved in cycles too, some years are great but eventually you'll hit a low point in attendance and interest. Then it'll pick up again.

if you can find a space for it a cheap all-local house show would be rad.
Re: POST-VIHC FEST 7 FUNDRAISING IDEAS
I'd like to point out that Comeback Kid was on a weekday...

THIS! there were 20-30 bands playing that weekend, that is a ton of people to pay. I would never dream of taking on such a task in vancouver let alone victoria where you have to help bands with ferry costs. that being said this is year number 7 and the VIHC society has balls for tackling this. I applaud everyone involved for their efforts.trappedinside wrote:sucks about you guys losing all that money on the fest, but honestly there were too many out of town bands and ticket prices were too expensive, a lot of people i talked to were not prepared to shell out $30 to see a bunch of hardcore bands they've never heard of, i'm sure at least a few of the bands got totally missed out on even by the people who were there just due to there being such an overwhelming number of out of towners to see... make the fest one day, keep it to a few out of towners people here are actually excited for and keep the ticket prices more reasonable and i think it will be a bigger success... that's just my opinion and by no means do i intend to belittle all the hard work i know you guys put into this every year. i want to see hardcore fest succeed and not lose a ton of money so there's my hopefully constructive input. also Comeback Kid is absolutely not a "hype" band, maybe they were five/six years ago, 180 kids at an all-ages hardcore show in victoria is a great turnout under any circumstances, this place does still have the potential for amazing all-ages shows but it's definitely getting tougher and tougher... an affordable venue would be a huge step in the right direction.
kids are stupid! I cant believe how often I see people come to an 8 dollar show asking if they can get in for 3 bucks even though they just bought and are trying to sneak in a 6 pack of beer. If door costs for a show are set at a price where you have a chance of breaking even people will start complaining about the price. I'm not going anywhere with this other than complaining that people are stupid.Andrew wrote:Your logic isn't wrong, but you have to realize that for a lot of kids hc and live music aren't a priority in their lives and to them buying beer/going to the movies/etc. is more important.
