And Andrew, to answer your question: Kinda. No, the world would not stop turning if we decided to do what Tyler wanted. However, I think that it would go against some ethics I hold pretty dear (such as free speech). I think there are lines (I don't want to see this turn into a giant racist, mysoginist hell hole) but I think that it's up to the community to combat that sort of thing, not the admin's. If someone comes on and posts a really racist joke, for example, I would instantly come in and denounce that. But I would be pretty upset if Tyler or someone else just locked a thread like that, mainly because that doesn't actually deal with the problem. It simply sweeps it under the rug.

Look at what happened here. Tyler tried to lock the thread, people got upset and there was a large scale discussion about it, and now we're getting to decide how the board will run from here on out. There was discussion, resolution, and concrete change. I'd say that's a positive thing, and if we had simply complied with Tyler and ignored the problem, it would have just ended up getting worse.

Obviously this is just my perspective, but I think this was a pretty good thing overall.

For me I guess I feel like there are battles worth fighting for and some that aren't. It surprised me that so many took something I viewed as trivial as a hot button.
In principle of course I support free speech, but I regarded this less about oppressing people's right to say something and more about respecting Tyler's comfort . To me, I see why it bugs Tyler. He's not conservative about people partaking in general, just that he doesn't like the idea of his name being attached to a discussion on an illegal (be that right or wrong) activity in a public place. I don't smoke weed so I felt no personal affront to complying with Tyler. I see those who do partake are a bit more touchy about it.

I also feel like with message boards moderation can be healthy to the overall board. B9 is a great example of the "don't restrict my free speech" type of board.
I respect the principle but don't enjoy the reality. So how do you balance reality against principle in a real world way on something like a message board?

Honestly the B9-esque flavor of a thread about smoking weed is unappealing to me.

And how do we get around Tyler feeling uncomfortable about this? I don't think telling him to lighten up or saying he's wrong to want to quash certain topics really helps him not be uncomfortable, does it?

And Andrew, you're absolutely correct. I don't want this to turn into the B9 either. Don't get me wrong, that shit makes me laugh my ass off, but it's better on there than it is on here. We can't combat everything, though, and generalized rules as a whole tend to do more harm than good. The way I look at it is thus:

Someone posts a thread that a vast amount of people find objectionable. Or is simply objectionable on it's own (i.e. racism, rape humor, whatever). And no one does anything about it. That's when it's the moderators job to step in and deal with the problem. If there's a thread where said objectionable material is being thrown about, but the community as a whole is dealing with the issue (calling people out, or simply mocking them to the point where they lose all credibility) then I see no reason for a moderator or admin to step in. The problem is being dealt with and as such there is no problem.

As Tyler pointed out, I've been guilty of this myself. I've locked threads I shouldn't have, and have rightly been called out on it. I'm not perfect, neither is Tyler. Sometimes, people will say something that they shouldn't, and nothing will be done about it. Sometimes, someone will see or read something that's so offensive to them that they never return. These things will slip through the cracks. But I'd rather have intellectual freedom (and diversity, for that matter) than a place that's white washed. The reward is worth the risk.

I never want to see the kind of place that Nick Gibas wants. Societal rules and taboos exist for a reason. 4chan is the only place that can legit get away with being 4chan. But at the same time, we can't assume that what we believe and know is correct for everyone, and by making this a place where certain subjects are institutionalized taboos, then we lose a little bit of the interesting things that make us what we are.

The best solution, honestly, is to create a sub-forum where anything goes. You can make Nick Gibas the moderator, and if you wanna talk about weed or nun based porn you can. Something Awful did this and it worked amazingly well. Then if someone posts something in the general section that a host of people find objectionable it can be moved to that sub-forum. Alternatively, if people don't want to read that they simply just don't go to that forum.

an anything goes forum is a great idea! really great, actually. something only registered members who are logged in can see, like a William T. Riker forum of everything else. I am really glad you suggested this. anything can happen there, including heated discussions, taboo topics, etc. anything uncomfortable could be moved there, people could know what they're getting into when they check it out, entering would be a sort of obvious "well they're my friends so nobody's really going to be hurt" thing, and then there's no censorship whatsoever. unless anyone thinks that by a topic being moved there, it's being censored. cause I don't think so.

I'm a moderator over at livevictoria and this is actually their policy. there's a forum called "Controversy and Quarantine" and it's my job to move the inane ramblings of Grimlord over there.

all we need is a name! and Willa, since it was your idea, you should totally name it. I agree about nick being mod too, haha. maybe something like "Monsiour Gibas' CP Dungeon"

Actually, this is the case. Nick, there's ample evidence that 4chan has been majorly corrupted by the FBI for this very reason, and thousands of people have been arrested for having CP on their history or in the hard drive cache.
