Looks like people are starting to catch on to what you've been saying for a while. Is this a good thing? The use of the word itself is pretty haphazard when used by major media sources and my grandmother. On the other hand, as someone who is hoping to become dependent on words for a living, I'm not sure I like the idea of "killing" a word simply because you find it annoying. Then again, can a word be destroyed? There's an argument to be made that once in the lexicon a word is impervious. Look at the attempts to kill the n-word. Then again, in that case it might be for the best to demand a word die. But should we stop using something simply because we might accidentally offend someone? What if the word fits in context?
Fuck, I just gave myself a headache.

its the case of people calling others "beatniks" or "greasers" back in the day. in the end it means nothing. some people are comfortable listening to Beyonce and watching NHL. some people are comfortable wearing skinny jeans and listening to MGMT. life goes on

I like wearing levis 511s, listening to lady gaga, and watching beavis and butthead. where does that put me?

I don't care if the word "hipster" goes away or not. Some other term will be invented that I'll just automatically replace in my head with "People who like things that I don't and that makes me butt hurt."

Fair enough. Dude in the article pointed out how the pejorative descriptor of choice before that was "emo", which was a pretty ridiculous concept in and of itself.
This thread is now about what the next word used by mass media talking heads will be. The more it proves the concept that they're out of touch with the rest of the populace, and young people specifically, the more points you get.
My entry:
Popster (pawp-stehr) n, adj.:
1.) A person who is so tuned into the latest, greatest music trend in the mainstream that they are almost one step ahead of the music moguls who create them.
2.) One who sports purple skinny jeans, American Apparel deep-V necks, and condescending attitudes yet legitimately and unabashedly loves Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, and T-Pain. (pejorative, until embraced by Vice Magazine)

Re: ATTN: Zach
on the topic of killing words, the original meaning of 'gay' could be arguably dead, or it could be altered beyond recognition into a new meaning.

Re: ATTN: Zach
words change all the time
words also disappear.
so yeah languages rule
Like from Old English "Hi" means "they"
or from
middle english
"soon" meant immediately/this instant.
Also for the gay argument.
quoted from some paper thing
Silly (OE) meant "blessed"
pretty sure i could find some mroe changes if i actually found my notes or bothered to look in text books rather than using the internet and the few i remember
so yes hope! to kill words / change meanings?

Pretty sure i have said this before on here but yeah pejoration of words (word's meaning worsens or degenerates)The example everyone knows is gay, which originally meant "merry", but because some people are a little too merry came to mean "wanton", and because some people are a little too wanton came to mean "homosexual", which is the sense almost exclusively used now.
