I wasn't referring to me not having any money really but I don't at all it's just the way he said it in that if you can't afford gear you shouldn't be a band. How is that fair?

I didn't take it as absolute as you shouldn't be a band, just that if you like playing music it should be a goal/priority in your life. While it does apply to your circumstances, I don't think it was directed at you.officespace wrote:I wasn't referring to me not having any money really but I don't at all it's just the way he said it in that if you can't afford gear you shouldn't be a band. You cats are young, I understand why you don't have gear yet. You'll get there.
What I questioned was the tartness of your response, because if you think using your $$ to get gear is a stupid idea, you have to remember that the reason your band gets to play shows is because someone else did just that to buy the amp you'll borrow to do your thing.
Re: Gear thread cont'd
It's interesting to me that you said this though, because it relates back to the root ideals of punk rock, that anyone can do it and to not let circumstance (including financial) stop you from expressing yourself/having that release.officespace wrote:if you can't afford gear you shouldn't be a band. I think the original spirit of that idea applies to All For The Best. Moreso I think this thread is about people who take advantage of/abuse that idea within the punk/hc community.

I do use some of the money I earn on my band but our band is full of teenagers who you know can't just get a job that earns us 25 bucks an hour to buy sweet gear(this isn't a shot at you Andrew). But I feel that if the scene is full of people who under no circumstance lend people gear it will lead to a scene where the same bands play every night b/c they've got a van and the good gear b/c they've been at it so long.Andrew wrote:I didn't take it as absolute as you shouldn't be a band, just that if you like playing music it should be a goal/priority in your life. I don't think you need to worry about that. I think what this boils down to is if you need to borrow gear, respect it. If people aren't into loaning their gear, respect that too.officespace wrote:I do use some of the money I earn on my band but our band is full of teenagers who you know can't just get a job that earns us 25 bucks an hour to buy sweet gear(this isn't a shot at you Andrew). I'm sure most of us (I certainly was) were in your shoes at your age. When I was 17 I scrimped and saved to get my first real amp. I did a lot of looking around, learned what deals are out there and when I did buy, it was something I could afford (ie. cheap) that I made sure did what I needed it to do (allowed me to play shows). Believe me, I understand not having money for gear.
And if anyone in your band ever decides they want to buy some more music gear, feel free to talk to me if you want any advice or tips on deals out there.

i know this isn't buy and sell, but anyone want to buy my Ampeg 6x10?

Re: Gear thread cont'd
I would if I could offload my 8x10 on someone else.
Re: Gear thread cont'd
If you don't know already, the Ampeg 610hlf is a different sounding cab to the SVT810. Not necessarily better or worse (though you might think so) but the 6x10 isn't a mini version of the 8x10.grind/bro wrote:I would if I could offload my 8x10 on someone else.

I had saved up and bought a marshall 4x12 (from the buy and sell) and a hughes and kettner 100 watt tube amp (at a pawn shop) by the time I was 17 by working at a convenience store and literally mowing lawns.

Which Peavey amp do you own?xchadx wrote:Wait until I finally get a band going to play bass in and Vancouver feels the wrath of my ruthless bass gear that is.....my Peavey rig. Cheap, indestructible, and apparently quite loud. I haven't had a chance to actually play the head and cab that loudly yet, but god damn..people online are right when they refer to those 80s Peavey cabs as "fridges". I nearly died after lugging that cab up my three flights of stairs (because I'm badly out of shape). This stuff will hold me over until I get "better" gear in the future. Andrew, I'm gonna hit you up for some bass gear advice/help when I have money again. I need to get a new bass.
Sure thing, if I can help I'd be happy to.

That should do the job no problem.xchadx wrote:Steve helped me find these for dirt cheap. Peavey 1810 (or is it 1820? I'm a n00b when it comes to gear) cab, and a Peavey Mark IV head. Stuff was so cheap it was ridiculous, and all of the reviews online came up quite positive!
I've been tempted to get an old Peavey rig because so many pics from the rev summer DC bands show a peavey bass amp. I want to bite that Rites of Spring/Embrace bass sound.

Oh I know. I just want to get rid of that fridge like cab forever...too much stress moving it around and I weigh like 30 pounds wet.Andrew wrote:If you don't know already, the Ampeg 610hlf is a different sounding cab to the SVT810. Re: Gear thread cont'd
Then the 610hlf would treat you better. Next time we play a show together you're welcome to try my Bergantino 6x10 if you like. It does the svt810 cab sound really well, and weighs 98 lbs, so 67 lbs. less than the typical Ampeg fridge cab.grind/bro wrote:Oh I know.
