Circle jerk at the empress, Kyle's room, 9pm SHARP! No ins/outs!
I play bass. I play guitar. I do both poorly. What's up.
Re: Computer Advice
macs are for old people and ladies that care more about what the outside looks like. PCs can be upgraded and tweaked, when you buy a mac, get used to that exact setup, it's never going to change and you'll have to shell out another 2 - 3 thousand dollars when that one isn't good enough again. and again and again.

Re: Computer Advice
I'd rather be old or a lady than have my computer freeze and die of viruses every 6 months.

Re: Computer Advice

Computer before that i had for 4 years. 3 Viruses over those 4 years.grind/bro wrote:I'd rather be old or a lady than have my computer freeze and die of viruses every 6 months.
I never get people that seem to get them so often.

Re: Computer Advice
you're in the demographic that's supposed to buy a mac to impress your friends or something.
I say go pc. surprised how pro-pc this thread has been. Willa brings up all the right points. you can upgrade that shit, you can pay much less for the same level of hardware, and pcs and macs are equally good at what you're looking to do. on a personal level, I find the interface of mac os to be extremely irritating.
also macs freeze too, viruses are not that hard to avoid or remove (EVEN WHEN VISITING -THOSE- SITES). also I've had my current computer for five years and it's totally great and running windows 7. and I have seen many fb status updates about macs suddenly becoming bricks and needing to be sent in or something. so I don't know how that makes their components any better. at least IF something goes wrong with a PC, it's pretty much only ever the hard drive, which is a very cheap replacement.
about the recording and design industry comments, I'd say they're much more split than you'd think. my multimedia design job (and troy's) were at a place that was mostly PCs and some macs. we were using a program that was actually PC-only and the only one of its kind. my recording technician job at uvic was on a mac, yeah, but using programs that were available for and able to interface with both macs and PCs. I don't think it's such a black-and-white situation.

Mac and Windows aren't the only options....
There's a 3rd choice that still allows you to upgrade your computer as often as you like AND you don't have to worry about viruses!

Re: Computer Advice
yeah there is that third option. I doubt Kyle will consider it. I used to keep a linux install as a backup.. i guess i am too lazy to use it most of the time...

Re: Computer Advice
yeah, I have a boot-from-cd version of knoppix for emergencies. I never found all the linux-compatible open-source versions of graphics/sound/etc programs to be very good, so that's my primary reason for not using it as a main thing. but mostly laziness and over-familiarity with windows.

Re: Computer Advice
It's all about Ubuntu, its really easy to get used to if you use windows. I am not familiar with Knoppix but Ubuntu and Kubuntu are Gnome and KDE based, and there is tons of good open source software for them. I don't know about Audio/Video editing software cause I don't use them but as far as graphics go Gimp rules. I doubt the average user would be able to do anything in photoshop that they couldn't do in Gimp.

I like macs. im on one right now and im fucking limited. My next computer will be a pc, and i will build it myself and save oodles. probably in the next year depending on tech reports.
