I'd also like you to troubleshoot my bass setup if you get a chance sometime and don't mind. I feel like my cab might need the speakers to be replaced but I'm really not sure. I once lent it out at a few house shows without asking the wattage the heads were using and I think it might have been grossly overpowered. what exactly does that kind of mismatch do anyway?
It isn't cheap, I think it's around $2000.

Sure, I don't mind checking out your bass rig. What is your cab doing that makes you think it might need the speakers replaced, vs. a recone or alignment?

Speakers are made to handle twice the wattage of their rating (ie. if the speaker is rated for 400 watts it's made to handle 800 watts before it gets destroyed). Do you recall anyone borrowing your cab with a hellishly powerful amp that they turned up way too much? What's your cab rated for?

i love gear talks. You may or may not have noticed, i like gear.

The bass rig has been refined over time. I have gone back and forth over heads and combination of heads but the most solid best bass tone i've ever gotten has been using my 1971 svt and an eden head at the same time through different cabs. also, on the subject of bass cabs, the ampeg 4x10HE is not my cup of tea but i do like the 4x10 HLF with the tweeter turned down all the way. the mesa powerhouse 1200 is kick ass too with its 4x10s and a single 15 stuffed into a single cab.

I tried using an eden 1205 on it's own and thought it sounded good but after blowing it up twice and going back to the eden wt400 and svt combo, i'll just have to resign myself to bringing two amps to shows because it sounds better.

my guitar rig is pretty simple, a 4x12, power amp and axe fx for regular bands and the same except any combo of 4x12s and a 2x15 for compound terror.

I just got myself a guitar and bass endorsement through mike sherman custom guitars http://www.sherman-customs.com and am playing those guitars when i play 8 strings and my fretless 4 string bass is his too. eventually i'll have a couple more basses and a couple 7 strings. they are all on order, dunno when they will be done.

What's the Eden giving you that the SVT's not? What cab does each head run into?

the eden is a lot cleaner and the eq is active so you can use the eq to do more. it's got a more modern "hi fi" sound. i run it with a lot more low end and run the svt with more high end so they blend well. I runt he svt into the ampeg cab and the eden into the mesa cab.

i think they are awesome, obviously. It really depends on the conditions and the company i think. Since mine is from a small luthier that does everything himself with no employees, i think it's awesome.

free gear sounds like a good deal to me. Especially nice hand made guitars... although I say 8 strings is too many.

I'd love one. Even if it was just for strings! Imagine free strings for life!

I agree, I appreciate the help.

I played in a band with a guy who was mortified by endorsements, considered it selling out, got real bummed on us.

Most endorsements aren't free gear, they're some form of discount.

Never have. Both cabs are four ohm loads. Not sure those old svts will handle a combined two ohm load correctly.

SVT's (both old and new) are rated to run at 2 and 4 ohms. In fact the SVT came with two 8x10 cabs when it was originally put out in '69.

But not with an SVT, it can't do an 8 ohm load.

oohhh reeree? i might end up doing that for kicks soon then. i'm a little worried about stressing it since it's so old and prone to fucking exploding. hah.
