Recording thread

Post by Crucified »

So, all you dudes that do recordings at home or where ever, post your gear. Also this thread can be used to geek out on new shit or ask questions i suppose.

Currently I'm recording using Cubase 3 and 5 or Reaper.

Mackie onyx 1640i
universal audio la-610
axe fx

+ a bunch of mics.

Allen and Heath just announced the best mixer I've ever seen at a price point i might be able to afford at some point. Of course there are better sounding/performing boards like ssl and neves and crap but this board seems to be geared towards those that don't have 40k to spend on a console. Which is awesome.

http://www.allen-heath.com/uk/gs-r24.asp

look at that thing, 24 flying faders, midi daw control, 2 tube preamps, 6 aux, 4 subs. what more could to ask for under 10 grand? not much!

Reaper is alright, loads very quickly, but isn't worth using because of compatibility issues.

this is true about a lot of things with reaper. If you are not using much for plug ins, it's alright but there are a few plug ins that just don't seem to want to work correctly. plus the midi mapping is not as sweet as other programs. i still dig on reapers bus system.

my stuff sucks but I like it

software:
pro tools 8 LE is my main jam (shh, nothing important gets done here anyway)
sometimes I need to use acid, audacity, cubase, reason, sonar, ableton, and other shit that's easy to pirate

interfaces and mixers and stuff:
digidesign mbox 1
behringer ub502
behringer ub802
m-audio audiophile
tascam tape 4 track

mics:
shure sm57
shure sm58
sound professionals binaural microphone set
studio projects c-1
realistic highball 33-984b and a bunch of other sm58 knockoffs

I miss working at uvic as a recording technician. they had such nice mics, such a nice board, such a nice hall, etc. those were the days. I can upload some ORTF/XY/etc concert recordings I did. the stuff at my house is very amateur and cheap. I love pro tools though and I'm not afraid to admit it.

oh yeah, if anyone uses midi, I use a yamaha cs6x as a controller, sometimes my roland juno 106 to pump jams through, a midines cart and my nintendo, a yamaha keytar as a controller for live use in verisimilitude, my m-audio interface for midi in/out, some other stuff. I used to love doing things with midi like ten years ago. lots of sequencing and half-ass songwriting. it's still relevant and useful in certain applications and lots of people seem to have abandoned it or not learned anything about it.

i use midi as a controller for vst instruments mostly. I also use it for sending channel switching on the axefx.

For mics i have

5 x sm57
1 x sm 58
1 x beta 58
1 x beta 59
1 x sm7b
1 x some shure elvis looking mic for live use
1 x at 2020
1 x at 415 or 425, i forget
1 set of cad drum mids that i no longer use
2 x matched pair of rode nt5s

i'd really like a half dozen Josephson e22s for toms/guitars but they are a grand each and i don't really record other people often so thats out of the cards until i find a room i can rent/use to do more recording with people.

I researched some ways to turn a tiny closet downstairs into an iso room for recording guitar or bass in. i need to find a place in town to get isolation foam. anyone know of one?
