I'm wanting to use something for recording songs in my bedroom, just for my own use of chronicling stuff I write. I bought a 1/4" to headphone jack adapter so I can plug my guitar direct into my computer. What program should I use for recording? I'd also like to be able to make drum beats on it. I have a basic concept of recording software, I've used cubase a little in high school, but that's about it.

the sound quality you can achieve with a usb interface will be noticeable, at least compared with the way you're currently recording (with a headphone jack adapter). that'd be the first step i'd take. maybe also grab a semi okay condenser mic, you'd be surprised at what stores are offering these days ($$$ wise).

I don't care how it sounds, I just need to get from A to B, aka from my guitar to having it stored on my computer.

Also, I have no idea how converting to a usb interface works.Halp?

i use adobe audition 3. ive always used cooleditpro and the type software. i find it easiest to use but also has some decent compression etc on it.
i was using beatcraft for a drum machine. best one ive found so far.
you might wanna download like some sorta guitar modeling thing if your just plugging right in.

you can torrent both of those for free.

um. plug usb interface in. then plug guitars and/or mics in. hit record. shred. you're gold.

audition is GREAT. i dont really know much about using it for music recording, but it's for sure the industry standard in terms of voice recordings and/or commercials.

i agree with the USB interface and mic but it'll cost you.

ive been using a tascam us1641 which cost me like 400 bucks a few years ago and its got like 16 ins and 4 outs i think, but you could get like a 2 in 2 out for about 60-100 bucks. and you can get a shitty behringer mic for like 20 bucks.

thats all assuming you dont live in an apartment or something and have stoopid neighbours

is this just to demo stuff so you don't forget it? Download reaper, use drumkit from hell as a drum machine and do a direct in for guitar. You can get some really great free vsts for guitar too. the is a recto one that sounds surprisingly good for what it is.

If you'd not going to do this for sound quality don't bother with an interface and mic, it'll just be throwing money away.

What I do is I plug my mics into my mixer and then I line out from the mixer to computer. I record on Audacity.

I find it's a great way to do simple home recordings for super cheap.

yeah, using a mixer as a mic preamp and running into line-in on a decent sound card works well instead of using an audio interface.

I remember back in high school I used to do the guitar-into-line-in thing and use software amp simulators but it was pretty crappy. maybe it's better now. I remember it sounded crappy and I think there's a huge impedance mismatch when you do it that way. you could use a DI box as a go-between, I guess?

with all the USB interfaces available, that might be the best way to go.

these are my ghetto home-recording setup options:
1) digidesign m-box into pro tools
2) mixer into computer, panned to create two channels

two channels is good enough for recording some guitar jamz from an amp. stick a shure sm57 against the speaker and a decent condenser a little further back and you've got a pretty awesome setup.

also drumkit from hell is seconded! it shouldn't be too hard to download a torrent of it and use it in conjunction with cubase if that's what you're familiar with. sequencing drums is annoying but DKFH has some pretty good metal beats already made that can be modified for a hardcore context.
