that rules... This is a seriously organized attack on the ruling elite, the likes of which we haven't seen in years. I get the feeling in 50 years this era will be looked upon as a major moment in world affairs...

I love the part where it tells people to bring "A rose to show that we can do what we ought to and join together in the most peaceful way possible"

in other news

Obama is being way too pragmatic in his approach to addressing this uprising. Mubarak, has long been an american ally, so it makes sense, he's hedging his bets trying to fall on the right side when the dust settles. It would be in The west's best interest to make an ally of those who will be replacing the leaders who are looking like they might be ousted. It could be a major step forward in US/Arab/Islamic relations if Obama shows strong support of a truly democratic uprising by an Arab nation.

Interesting. Seems to reinforce the idea that the Egyptian military is on the side of the protesters.

this was kinda my whole point. the way i read it - it looked more like it had devolved into some airing and ad hominem discussion. that doesn't seem to serve any sort of constructive, non-self indulgent end, or have any relevance to the topic at hand - this is the way i saw it. i know you'll disagree with me here, but some things said on the internet definitely get way too blown out of proportion and way too serious for their own good. i just don't think it's worth getting all uppity every time i read something i disagree with. life's too short for that. sometimes it's worth it to let things slide.

there are others, but if you want to see another joke post itt, look for tambo's brendan fraser comment. i don't know anyone here who was "blindly defending" their friends... i'm not even sure who my friends are! instead of "minimizing it", i was actually trying to point out that all the hot air won't float us anywhere. but now by taking this further, i'm contradicting myself... so i'll digress.

as you were...

That is simply because the military are the people. While they are still from time to time put in the position of law men, its not nearly enough to develop any type of "us against them" mentalities. Their job is to oppress others certainly not their own.

I've read a couple articles saying Murbarak has fled from the country, anyone know if this is true or not yet?

I've been hearing this, too, but I'm not finding any actual confirmation. If someone can find this and post a solid link I'd be stoked.

Pat, I completely see what your saying, but this is one of those "perception vs. reality" type of situations. The perception is that the military is of the people, for the people. However, I think that the vast amount of times, when a country's military gets involved in an insurrection, it's either to wrest control of their own (Myanmar) or suppress said insurrection (Tianamen Square. Although, interestingly enough, in recent years it's come to light that the Chinese government purposefully brought in soldiers from the country to suppress the Tianamen uprising, because they were afraid that city-born soldiers would side with the students). Either way, it's refreshing to see a military that actually seems to care for the people they're charged with protecting. I just don't think it happens that much.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, as far as I have seen the protests have been mainly peaceful and any aggression seems to be directed at the police/government. So I'd say that the protesters probably won't bother him. The government also knows what side their bread is buttered on, so I can't see them fucking with an oil company. That rig is probably the safest place for him to be, right now.

Quotes from my buddy overseas, who's actually in Egypt right now...
On the rig, and not allowed to do any work! My universe just got flipped upside down.
No choppers because of the unrest in Egypt, so no medivac, so not allowed to work in case we get hurt.
