stanley cup / vancouver riot
this was bound to be discussed here, right?
my facebook feed is full of people saying "shame on vancouver" and stuff. I want to share my perspective, even though it's really unpopular and most people here will disagree.
the fact that people got hurt and private possessions like cars and stuff were destroyed? lame. super lame.
but turning over cop cars and lighting them on fire and looting department stores and stuff? even despite the fact that it's pointless, there's something that makes me think that actions like this are kind of cool.
I know, I know, "why would you destroy your own city, waste tons of money, tarnish your country's reputation, all for no reason" right? but I still think that riots are an interesting extension of public power vs. established power. maybe I'm a huge hypocrite for getting annoyed at a weed talk thread earlier in the year. I just like that a crowd is still able to get out of the control of the police for a while. how often does that happen in Canada?
maybe I'm just fascinated by the mob mentality and played too much Warriors / San Andreas for XBOX (both have awesome riot/looting parts in their plot). would I want my stuff to be broken? would I want to feel worried for my life if I liked a different sports team? no and no. but I still like to see police cars burning.
seriously not trolling, though I do expect many many arguments against the riots.

Re: stanley cup / vancouver riot
they all acted like adrenaline pumped nine year olds. they are big fucking babies.
they most likely destroyed my favourite stores in vancouver.(not that its super important, but it's still shitty)
there are so many things worth rioting over, yet the outcome of a ports game causes this.
so, to repeat what everyone has already said, for shame vancouver rioters, for shame.

Re: stanley cup / vancouver riot
still, I think I'd like to see a bunch of adrenaline pumped babies rioting over something stupid, rather than live in a country where nobody feels like they can hit the streets and mess it up. what if this was like 2065 and the robo police would vapourize anyone who rioted?

Re: stanley cup / vancouver riot
I think the concept of people rioting over sports is very, very sad... it's easy for me to view it with a sense of humor living on the island and getting to watch this shit unfold on TV, I will admit I gained some satisfaction from watching riot cops go at it against sports meatheads, but if that shit were taking place outside my house I'm sure I would have a very different view of things. If it were a riot over any kind of real cause as opposed to the results of entertainment I could definitely agree with what you are saying Tyler, in this case I merely find the whole event a sad reminder of the mentality of the world we live in.
Re: stanley cup / vancouver riot
was it really about the sports? or was each little Vancouverite sick of their jobs and lifestyle and the downward-plummeting world we live in, and channeled all their remaining passion into a game. so when the game went bad, all their frustrations at being held back in high school and how little Jessie-Mae cheated and got pregnant with another dude and how Stephen Harper who they're sure is a bad guy for some reason is in power.. they finally had a chance to release all that anger.

If all those people had started bands instead of a riot it would have probably been cooler.
*edit* Actually, they're hockey fans, never mind.

Re: stanley cup / vancouver riot
1. Most of the people getting tear gassed were people I wanted to get tear gassed.
2. Lighting cop cars on fire is always cool. Lighting cops on fire is even cooler. Teenagers, take note.
3. JR is the entire reason this riot happened. He just showed up with his beard and shit got turned inside out.
4. Black Bloc? Really? Come on.

You don't need any of them. You just need drugs.

Re: stanley cup / vancouver riot
This riot was fueled by drunken, idiots who are probably already known to police for some more minor/possibly major offenses. The whole "black bloc" participation thing is horse-shit. Look at those videos. Theres enough AXE hair gel amongst those rioters to fill a football stadium. Essentially it boils down to spoiled North American idiots thinking they have the right to do anything they want because of the atmosphere that large public gathers can possibly enlist upon people. Ironic that they'd attack a Chapters considering probably the closest any of them have come to a book is Neil Strauss's "The Game".
Re: stanley cup / vancouver riot
Heard this on the news last night. They showed looters in The Bay wearing black hoodies and said it indicated they were Black Bloc protesters. In no way did these people look like they were part of any protest movement. In no way did the reporter have evidence to support his claim. Still had the gall to say it though.officespace wrote:the cops blamed it on anarchist so now I don't give a shit. It was all the black bloc you guys.
