A member of Horizons was pretending an open water bottle was his dick, a girl got on stage and drank the whole thing. People in the crowd cheered and clapped, and the singer said "this song goes out to the girl who suck my dick". Members of Blackwater then held up a sing about how applauding this type of behavior is a bad impression for kids just getting into punk/hardcore, and isn't what punk is about. Members of Harizons nealed down in front of the sing and took pictures laughing at them, then they grabbed the sing tore it up, and chugged beers in front of the venue.Rude Boy Puff wrote:Can I have specifics on fest drama please?

Just to clarify, it was just as much members of Grow as it was Blackwater; they/we also meant no disrespect to any member of the VIHC, or others attending the fest. Props to those guys for standing up for what they believe in.
For me, highlights of the fest were definitely Grow, Blackwater, Static Thought, Maus, and Burning Ghats.
Pretty bummed I missed most of the second day but I had other things to deal with, unfortunately. ):

UHG. Sounds like some shit douche-bag bros pull at spring break. Makes me sad that people will associate crap like this with hardcore. It is embarrassing on the level of "death core" and "crunk core".

I'm pretty sure the lead singer said move up we're not fags as well before their set started. Regardless I left when they first started playing. They're fucking boring anywaysdave mac wrote:evan wrote:A member of Horizons was pretending an open water bottle was his dick, a girl got on stage and drank the whole thing. pretty sure it was the lead singer of Horizons. It was after their set in the hallway.xchadx wrote:Wait, who said that?officespace wrote:also had a hard LOL at "this isn't the place for politics. Save that shit for Monday"

Re: Van Isle party fest 7, 2011 Get into it
The sad truth is that this IS a component of hardcore. It just is. Its also a component of punk, as illustrated by the Dayglos Abortion/drunk punk/chaos thing that a lot of kids dive head-first into. We can't just say "this isn't what hardcore is about," we have to say "we don't want this shit in hardcore" and take an active stand against it. I thought Blackwater and Grow did an interesting job of it, and conversely Horizons did an excellent job of demonstrating what having an attitude like that does; fucks up venues, degrades women, divides scenes and only promotes negativity.dave mac wrote: Makes me sad that people will associate crap like this with hardcore.

Re: Van Isle party fest 7, 2011 Get into it
i was only there for saturday, but:
+ the venue was great and close to everything
+ positive vibrations all day, until ... roughly 8pm
+ my bandmates not being drunk for our set
+ out of sight, maus, no eulogy
+ meeting the singer of FUNK VIGILANTE (http://youtu.be/5JHbFQqSljE) at that bar later
- dicksuckgate2011
- missing white wards, watcher, invasion
- spilling my slurpee in the main hall and possibly COSTING EBONY THE VENUE

Great shows, overall good vibes. Much thanks to all involved with its execution. There were many good oens, but I'd have to say Griever was my favourite set of all.
Horizons can suck my left one. Stoked those Cali screamo kids said something against them and the rest of the sexist thugs (who I'm hoping but not assuming will not be invited back)...
I appreciated seeing such a diverse lineup that all falls under the umbrella of "hardcore". Despite the conflicts it made for a great weekend with a lot to offer.

I didn't watch Horizons because I find them incredibly boring... After hearing about their set I feel I made the right choice.

I can't speak for the rest of the guys, but Horizons unfortunately won't be invited back by me in particular but that was for something else. I stayed out of the left and right wing hardcore politics that happened on saturday night. I had too many people to please to be taking sides.cadaver wrote:Great shows, overall good vibes. Re: Van Isle party fest 7, 2011 Get into it
Sounds like my friends left quite an impression on ol' Van Isle hardcore this past weekend. I guess we can pretty much forget about Putrid Brew making it to next years fest upon my return to Canada. Ah well.
Re: Van Isle party fest 7, 2011 Get into it
I see both sides to the whole thing. I am sure every person on here, guy or girl, on here has made some kind of degrading joke, however minor, because that's the culture we grow up in and see everywhere. I'm also sure everybody on here has felt extremely guilty at some point over making fun of some lumped-together group and seeing a direct result that isn't just a few laughs. it sucks. humour and feelings are complicated.
the grow/blackwater dudes are well-meaning and fit the screamo stereotype of playing on the floor and standing up for women, all they needed were a few handclaps and they'd fit the mold perfectly. I know where the horizons dudes are coming from and I know we've all laughed at some frat boy type bullshit but they took it a little too far. of the two sides, I only met the grow/blackwater dudes and they were the nicest people EVER. one of them even bought the watcher 7". to see one of my favourite bands of the night actually buy my band's record while his band is on tour is like... really cool.
I think it comes down to knowing what you represent when you're on stage or representing another city. when watcher played edmonton, the victoria crew were some of the only people drinking and yet we somehow still made some really cool friends and contacts. maybe we got lucky. but it sounds like the horizons dudes are now known as dickheads and probably had a chance to apologize and mend the damage they did, but instead chose to be stubborn. that's too bad.
