well somebody has to out rank him.tylerp wrote:seriously, is there anyone I can contact to complain about a youth-hating community center "facility coordinator"? punk shows aren't "true" all ages events because old people don't like punk? it's just so full of generalizations.

Re: Brain Fever Oct 9th
we should rent out the hall for a "family event" and all dress up as old people. then once we are all inside we will have some hardcore bands play but we will sit in silence in chairs and gently clap between each song.
Re: Brain Fever Oct 9th
I know that there's no fighting things like that but I sent him a follow-up:
"I'm sorry. You cite a few specific experiences as reason enough to generalize and not trust underage kids. I throw events for bands comprised of high school kids, people in their 20's or 30's, or even 40+. I think if a couple of guys who are in their 40's can hang out with some 16 year olds over a common musical interest, that's pretty multi-generational.
Mainly, it's frustrating that bands have no way of playing medium/small scale events in the community.
With you as a "Community Coordinator", I'm asking for your advice. What do you think these kids should do? Give up their artistic outlet because their local community centers don't trust them and their friends to be responsible?
Do you think there may be profiling and a lack of understanding in the community that associates young music fans with the alleged annoying activities? Consider if similar activities were to occur during a multi-generational event - would that just be thought as a coincidence as opposed to being thought of as directly related?
Might there be a way of developing new rules and standards to allow the community center to ensure diverse programs and events are held, rather than a specific type of family event that may leave some excluded?
Tyler Pantella"
...and forwarded his original response to City Hall, the Victoria Arts Scan, and Scott L. Maybe someone at Monday Mag might be interested.

I don't know the landscape of Victoria, but over here there are shows under certain bridges that go down all the time and nothing has ever happened to stop them. Maybe find a bridge? All you need is a small generator and PA.

Andy's done this in the past. Sadly though it can be risky as Vic is notorious for cops always showing up and busting anything up...keep_it_real wrote:I don't know the landscape of Victoria, but over here there are shows under certain bridges that go down all the time and nothing has ever happened to stop them. This is true. I was slated to play under the Bay st. bridge last year around March/April and it got shut down in record time.grind/bro wrote:Andy's done this in the past. I'm sure Andy would be into helping out as far as promotion and suggestions for venues go, but I would suggest securing a venue that isn't going to get busted up by the cops.
Also, I can do a Bestial Sanctuary set for this show if need be.

Re: Brain Fever Oct 9th
one of the Monday Magazine staff members contacted me, looks like that email I got might be the inspiration for a follow-up venue piece in Monday Mag.
also was advised by Victoria to contact the Fairfield City Councillor.

i've been considering contacting the native friendship center on my block to see if they'll allow us a show there. the building is very large, is right next to a park and i think they have a big gym

perhaps if they already know your face you might be able to spearhead a first meeting/calling to see if they'd be into it? i'm not asking you to book anything but if you were to ask them and put them in touch with myself or pauly or something?

Re: Brain Fever Oct 9th
the "lack of all ages venues" story was already in Monday Magazine, but now the dude is following up and contacting both the Fairfield venue guy and Pam Madoff with the intent of a follow-up story to print in a week or two.
meanwhile I contacted Pam Madoff, the City Councillor in charge of Fairfield (and with a huge history in the arts) and she is looking into the situation.
this could end up as nothing but I'm glad that I can take that offensive email response and turn it into something that maybe stirs up change a little. not that it's directly related to this show. it's just so telling of the venue situation in victoria.

tylerp wrote:"Tyler,
The problem with all ages shows is that they are generally geared to underage kids who, in our experience, abuse the rule of law, mistreat the venue, and annoy the neighbours with the activities that go on in the parking lot and park that is not monitored by security. We have had a long standing agreement with our neighbours to avoid those situations.
We do allow licensed, private events for families, but not for the general public, who do have bands and we do have sit down concerts for musicians, but not dances. With the proliferation of cell phones and social media, our little 100 seat hall has been filled to capacity and an additional several hundred milling about the edges of the park. This is why the community centres are hesitant to host events such as yours.
We have had success with multi-generational events where families with similar interests congregate. These are true all ages events because all ages are represented.

Re: Brain Fever Oct 9th
VNFC is amazing. I'm there once or twice every week in our community office. I don't now how often they rent out to groups without an aboriginal community focus but it's worth a shot! Especially if you offer to flyer and invite their youth? I would also add that you would probably have to have all your own sound gear, I don't recall seeing this in an abundance.
They were super amazing and let us use the gym on a slow day for free when my group and I were in desperate need of a practice space for our dancing. As far as I recall though the cost to rent is per hour and I'm pretty sure it's minimal.

Re: Brain Fever Oct 9th
I’m not sure about Victoria, but in cities like Langley where jumpings, loitering, public drug use, and other such things happen almost every day in the suburbs (at least the one i was raised in) much to the bane of the adult population; its seems absurd that rather than trying to facilitate/help youth trying to create a positive event that eschews drugs or alcohol and encourages a creative, DIY spirit, Community centers bar anyone from using their space because they think that all underage kids are just predisposed to make trouble wherever they go?
when i tried contacting the douglas park community center about putting on an all ages event they wanted 300 dollars (plus a 400 dollar deposit) for a 75 capacity room, as well as a contracted security force (IE paladin, adt, concord, ect ect) to keep an eye on the premises. i was 18 and they seriously expected me to pay for all of that, for such a tiny room.

Re: Brain Fever Oct 9th
victoria has become increasingly disappointing, I started going to local shows not that long ago, I think this will soon be 2 years of activity, I believe when I got involved was a high point, high attendance and such, then the bubble burst, and now we struggle, I'd like to thank everybody thats booked shows and bettered this community.
oh and this show is still on fyi
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=202995653097264
location should be announced within the week, just waiting to confirm.
I'm stoked that this is happening, but I'm disappointed in my city for making it such a struggle.
