VIHC.NET update - show listings
Hey guys,
The http://vihc.net/ main page has changed in functionality.
I was looking at nwhardcore and sort of admiring how they do things.
Right now, I find out about shows through livevic, Facebook, or these forums. I really wish there was a place where all remotely relevant shows (ie. No Eulogy at a bar, some bands playing at Talk's Cheap, an all ages punk show at Sunset Room, Cobras Cobras Cobras at the Fifty Fifty, etc.) were listed clearly and succinctly in one place. Without the need to scroll through a bunch of crap. And with the ability to click on it for more information or whatever.
So anyway, I put in some time to figure out a good way of listing events, but still making it so just anyone can do it, but without giving "just anyone" an administrative account that can screw up the rest of the site.
I'm now using a Google Calendar-fed widget that can provide an RSS feed, with a "public" account that anyone can log into to create shows. Right now it's just a basic example, but giving a "location" will lead to a Google Map (ie. a real venue) or not providing a street address location is also possible (ie. a house show). When you create an event in Google Calendar, you can put as much or as little information as you want. I'm hoping people will format their taglines nicely and not annoyingly.
Anyway, let me know what you guys think. I've made the change now. My main focus is getting all the relevant shows listed to make it easier to check what's happening without having to wade through Facebook crap. I have actually missed shows because of that reason.

This is a wonderful idea. I hope it works out. I will admit I use facebook events as a calendar for things I like to attend. Since you can no longer message events, it means promoter can no longer send out reminders and show goers no longer get reminded which can be a hassle to keep track of.

I approve of this. Seems as simple as it is useful. Makes me wish more people frequented this site, especially as I attempt to phase Facebook out of my life.

Re: VIHC.NET update - show listings
don't get me wrong, I use facebook events and they seem to have taken over as the standard/main place for these things. but my facebook events list is constantly full of invitations to lame shows, dj nights, helping people win contests, people who lost their cell phone and need everyone's number, things happening in cities I don't live in, etc. right now I must have 40 events that I haven't RSVP'd to, all jumbled together, and it's so annoying to go through them one by one and hit remove or yes or no or whatever.
if you wish more people frequented the site, spread the word! the forums are pretty much the "main use" of the site, but now it's easier to say "go to vihc.net" when someone asks for a show's details. rather than how it was before, which was like "go to vihc.net but not everything''s listed and I guess the last poster on the blog was hardcore fest so just click on message boards then general then figure out how to read it." and now, at least on my computer, the entire thing fits my monitor's height without needing to scroll. band links and show listings on one page, links to other pages with info and the message board. simple.

I like it a lot, It's a good place to send family when they ask what I'm involved in these days. it makes my lifestyle choice more legitimate
