Welp, Canada is officially turning into America 2: Electric Boogaloo. The minute Harper starts talking about our "freedoms" I'm heading to Sweden.

Canada has always been just as fucked as America. The novelty is just starting to wear off for you.

Not really. This is literally the first time I've seen something happen and thought "yeah, that's pretty much what would happen in America". Normally, even when Canada is fucked it's still better than the states.

As someone who's lived in Canada their entire life and crossed it several times over, I respectfully disagree. I'll give you that there's less gun crime and universal health care, but otherwise we're just more goofey and polite about hating eachother. I mean, I guess that the US government would have just tortured Maher Arar on US soil instead of sending him to Syria, but now we're just arguing over semantics. In most of the country being First Nations is a crime, our national passtime is shit talking the French, Every province except for Ontario hates Ontario and Ontario just looks down it's nose at the rest of the country, we raped the east coast of it's natural resources and then bailed leaving it slowly die, everyday immigrants become more of a scapegoat, and we have a government that seemingly helps out Canadians in trouble abroad on the basis of the colour of their skin. We're a big ol'e country full of like.

I guess. It's just that, as someone who's lived in America his entire life, Canada really is better by comparison. Again, I get it, there are problems Just not nearly as many, or as bad.

Of course, I also tend to shut out the outside world as much as humanly possible, so yeah, I'm willing to be wrong on this.

Well, when you put it like THAT, yeah okay, good point.

When I was in Saskatchewan and people were talking about Starlight Tours like they were just a fact of life is about when I was like "Yup, full of like."

Yeah, I mean, there are certain things that we do better than the US, but I also think that a lot of our national identity is based around a sort of anti-American circle jerk making most Canadians completely oblivious to the fact that we're just as horrible in a lot of respects, and instead of actually adressing these things we're much more content to say "Well, those just aren't real Canadian values".

When the cops pick up a person on suspicion of being First Nations, drive out to the middle of buttfuck nowhere, and then drop them off in a snow bank. And it's usually done at night when it's colder and harder to get home, hence the name.

Replace "First Nations" with "black" and you have the deep south.

Sure Canada has a long history of racism, unless your going in for stitches or a sprained ankle our universal health care blows, and we have no right to put ourselves on any kind of pedestal. Its still apples and oranges compared to Americas history of racism, shitty health care and pretention.

point is walmart sucks and I always wonder if the retards that shop there realize its more then likely one of the biggest reasons they cant find a decent job.

I disagree, Americans are generally much friendlier and outgoing than Canadians. Generally Canadians are much more reserved and keep to themselves more, and as a result are perceived as more polite, when really, we're just all assholes. Americans are just friendly assholes

To be fair, this is just based on my personal experience and shouldn't be read as pure fact, but I have spent a decent amount of time in the US of A and this is the impression I've gotten.

You know that they don't.

Though I don't know if I blame the general proletariat for their ignorance. The classic mentality is that one shouldn't, and certainly there is quite a lot of energy put into making the consumers unaware and complacent about their purchases, especially when they only really make enough to get by. So who can blame such a person for thinking of survival before politics?

But at the same time people who are aware, conscious, and active about such issues of corporate control come from the exact same situations, and they have figured it out.

So I don't know how to feel about people who haven't.

Disinfo (LOVE love love this site) posted this little article about Walmart/Gold from Congo. Pretty depressing/interesting stuff. Made me think of this thread.

Having lived in both countries, this is how I break it down:

Canadians are politer. That's just the way it is. They don't talk shit for the most part, they smile at everyone, and they're more than happy to help you out with directions. They're also cold, reserved, generally wary of strangers, and TERRIFIED of confrontation (which annoys the ever living piss out of me).

Americans are loud, crass, ignorant assholes. They'll also smile at you and mean it, hold the door for a lady, and give you the shirt off their back. They're passionate, verbose, annoying bastards who will be the first on the scene if there's ever somewhere that needs their help.

Both governments blow goats.

Canadians are like that guy at the party who means well but is too busy looking down it his nose at everybody having fun to loosen up and have a good time himself, but is always there to make sure that nobody drives home drunk.

Americans are like that guy at the party who means well but knocked back a 26er in 15 minutes, hits on your girlfriend, pukes in the washing machine, destroys a family heirloom and ends up dancing around with a lamp shade on their head, but they're always there to give you a smoke when you want one.
