Re: Bands you like but wish people who shut the fuck up about
I've never been able to get into Terrifier, Phantom Limb isn't bad but it just doesn't sound like they're as pissed off as they were on their earlier recordings. Prowler is one of the albums that got me into grindcore so I must hold a certain partiality towards it... I can't say I generally feel too inclined to put on Pig Destroyer nowadays, there are so many better grind bands, but they're a good gateway band. Seriously though their material on the split 7'' with Orchid is better than anything else they've done, some of the most relentlessly brutal over the top grind mayhem ever, I believe it's on 38 Counts of Battery... comparing that to their new material it just seems like they've lost their edge. In saying "it sucks" I was speaking in reference to that doom album, I'm a huge doom fan and I just found it completely unredeeming, maybe I would change my mind if I experienced it in some surroundsound shit, I dunno, maybe one day.

Speaking of bands that I could stand to never hear about ever again. The only thing this band had going for them was their (newer) drummer and he didn't even really get to do anything interesting in this band. Fuck are they ever overrated.trappedinside wrote: Insect Warfare

I agree that they're way overexposed actually, but they play grindcore the way I want to hear it so I cannot fault them.

hey now lets not drag john baizley into thisgrind/bro wrote: Can't say I agree. Terrifyer was a step in the right direction. Everything was there that should have been. A worthy follow up to Prowler. Phantom Limb came out and they added some random dude in the band that literally does nothing, and JR Hayes scaled back his lyrics/narrative on the album. Album cover, wow John Baizely? That sure is a surprise coming from a band on Relapse! Songs kinda meander around. Overall kind of found it too phoned-in. Don't get me wrong I will play the living fuck out of 38 Counts up to Terrifyer but everyone jumping on their dicks after hearing Phantom Limb? Really??
his work is beautiful. even if it is essentially all the same over and over
im with you. i consider myself quite versed in the realms of sludge and doom and that effort with Natasha was nothing short of a snooze fest done a million times before by equally boring bandstrappedinside wrote:I'm a huge doom fan and I just found it completely unredeeming, maybe I would change my mind if I experienced it in some surroundsound shit, I dunno, maybe one day.

I'd prefer that people shut up about bands that they don't like than the ones that they do.

I'm really glad that when I was first getting into punk rock and hardcore there was nobody there to call me a shit because I was into bands that were easily accessable. Maybe they'd have more of a half hearted intrest in hardcore if they weren't treated like such an inconvience and judged as unworthy because they're new, but were instead welcomed and educated. I mean, I'm pretty sure you weren't born clutching a YOT record. We all have to start somewhere. At one time we were all those annoying little shits who didn't get it bugging the real hardcore kids at shows and blowing our loads over Comeback Kid records or whatever. I got lucky though and met a lot of great people who were just stoaked that I was showing an intrest in hardcore.age of quarrel wrote:also, have heart. most people who know me know I love this band. I'm not going to say its any fault of their own and infact I get the impression this was a major contributing factor to their break up but they became that stepping stone band for kids to half heartedly get into hardcore and cling onto. have heart are good but they are not the most thought provoking band around that people put them on a pedestal for and make them out to be. the set they played in seattle on the last tour was just filled with those little shits, the ones you can spot from a mile away who dont get punk rock and never will. most of which will be gone by this time next year.

zach, this wasnt meant to be a jab at new kids getting into hardcore through easily accessable bands. I was listening to a ton of bane/comeback kid, I know thew importance of bands like these for younger kids. my problem lies with the cool kids. the ones who come out of nowhere jocks these bands nuts, do whatever the bridge 9 board deems to be cool and generally act like thier shit doesnt stink. the kids who will be gone in 6 months to a year, the kids that treat hardcore like its disposable.ZACH ATTACK wrote:I'm really glad that when I was first getting into punk rock and hardcore there was nobody there to call me a shit because I was into bands that were easily accessable. Between the Buried and Me is another one too. They're cool to listen to but I see so many fucking retards pick up BTBAM albums and then NEVER listen to anything remotely "heavy". Yeah they can play their instruments, get over it. Tons of people have no friends and fiddle with their guitar nonstop, and they aren't limited to this band.

Re: Bands you like but wish people who shut the fuck up about
I dunno man, I guess that just doesn't bother me. Most of these kids wont ever have more than a superficial interest in hardcore, and I don't think there's anything wrong that. We live in a time where just about everything, including hardcore and punk rock have been turned into hyper-disposable commodities and anybody can check out whatever flavour of the week band with a click of the mouse. I tend to think that most of these kids acting like tourists along for a fun ride are just a product of our culture and I can't really fault them for that. It's kind of like a catch 22 because even though we reject the idea of a throw away culture hardcore doesn't exist in a vacuum and is bound to attract of segment of kids who just want to be cool and trendy. It's annoying but at the end of the day it really has a minimal effect on me or my relationship with hardcore punk. And some of these kids will start to identify with hardcore on a level deeper than fashion and contribute some really great things which never would have happened if they weren't once misguided teenagers trying to be cool. It's kind of a double edged knife because on the one hand we have to deal with a lot of annoying shit, but on the other hand if we just sort of stick our noses in the air and act all punker than thou than none of those annoying kids are ever going to get anything more out of hardcore than a vehicle to look cool. Like I say, welcome and educate. Some kids will get really into it and the ones who don't will be gone soon enough anyways, and we'll still be able to say we made our best effort.age of quarrel wrote:zach, this wasnt meant to be a jab at new kids getting into hardcore through easily accessable bands.
