Re: UFC 107
I might actually be down. When is it? I'm pretty sure Smiths does these on their big screen.

Re: UFC 107
Shit, Saturday's my sister's birthday party. Sorry dude.
But yeah, on Alyssa's birthday we all went to Smith's and there was a UFC fight going on. It was on a big screen, and I seem to remember watching hockey games on that big screen, too.
Other people should get in on this, it sounds like a wicked time.

Re: UFC 107
The Main Card starts at 7, but they'll show a couple undercard fights for free on Spike starting at 6, which most places playing the ppv main event will show too.
Yes, this looks like a pretty good card.

Re: UFC 107
Josh, I'm pretty sure the Fox does UFC nights for like $5 a head for the PPV fights. I'm also pretty sure it wouldn't be hard to get Puff and Pauly into this. I would seriously be down, but this weekend is basically completely booked for me.
And believe me when I say I would rather be doing this. Ugh. I love my sister, but I do not love her parties.

I don't think Troy understands the appeal of UFC.

For me I was a boxing fan from the time I was a little kid, and MMA is an extension of that. If you appreciate martial arts, grappling or wrestling then (to me) MMA is just very impressive. When done well, the ability of these athletes to train in different disciplines and be able to integrate them together is really an art form.
I'm not so much for the pageantry of the events which is reminiscent of "wrestling entertainment" to me, but looking past that, the fights and fighters can be pretty awes0me.

well i get why some people like it just really mma seems way more hyped than anything else these days. It has really taken a huge place in popular culture. EVERYONE is into it. And yeah i guess what turns me off most is this "pageantry of the events which is reminiscent of 'wrestling entertainment' "Andrew wrote:Are you a fan of any other sportsTr0y?dalamar501 wrote:pretty much sums it upgrind/bro wrote:I don't think Troy Lemberg, Honest Dude, 2009 Lemberg, Honest Dude, 2009 Lemberg, Honest Dude, 2009 understands the appeal of UFC.

Never have really been into boxing. I did however enjoy watching the build up / fight of Ali & Foreman for Rumble in the Jungle. That whole movie that builds up to it etc.
For other sports i do for some reason enjoy keeping track of statistics of hockey. i never really watch the games... but yeah..
i enjoy playing basketball even though i am horrible.

Re: UFC 107
I love MMA when it's two guys with an amazing amount of skill and a healthy respect for their opponent going at it for twelve rounds. That rules. I like the "pageantry" bullshit, too, but I like heavyweight boxing for the same reason. It's the Don King effect; don't worry about skill or sportsmanship or any of that "integrity" bullshit. Lets just have two behemoths dance around each other for two rounds, and then one of them turns out to have a glass jaw.
I once saw two no name Mexican middleweights fight a bout. They spent the press conference before doing nothing but praising each other, and discussing how much they've wanted to fight and how much they respect each other. Then they got in the ring and spent the next twelve round doing their utmost to disassemble the other man. When the bell rang, they gave each other a massive hug, the winner was decided, and he spent his time with the journalists afterward talking about how awesome the fight was, and how great his opponent was.
Best fight I've ever seen.
I dunno. I just find that when you have two actual fighters in a ring, the over the top bullshit just takes away from the whole thing.

Re: UFC 107
I get it, it's widely loved and so many of the people into it are utter boneheads. MMA is definitely one of those things that you have to look past who the stereotypical person who likes it is. The world is full of those kinds of things, that the people associated with it tend to sour it (like Dungeons and Dragons, but that's another tangent/conversation).dalamar501 wrote: well i get why some people like it just really mma seems way more hyped than anything else these days. I agree that heavyweight fighting is less exciting than lighter weight classes. Watch WEC sometime, the 145 lb. and 135 lb. fighters. So much energy, speed and movement. Really dynamic, exciting fights.Hollow wrote:I love MMA when it's two guys with an amazing amount of skill and a healthy respect for their opponent going at it for 3-5 rounds. That rules. You get a lot of the mutual respect behavior in MMA too. These guys are professional athletes and many behave as such. Of course the flip side is you get the shit talkers and ego maniacs too, and of course they often get more notice/exposure because people gravitate to drama.
Re: UFC 107
call me an idiot, but it looks to me like a bunch of sweaty almost-naked dudes hugging each other on the floor a lot. I'm cool with that but it's not my first choice of entertainment. though for some reason I'm okay with it when you throw a guitar or two into the picture and cram it into a living room. I guess I just don't appreciate the nuances of grappling and brazilian jiu jitsu.

It's like anything else, you need to have some interest and put some time into it to understand what's going on and appreciate. Same as a lot of the music we all listen to, the great majority of people would say " call me an idiot, but this just sounds like noise to me".tylerp wrote:call me an idiot, but it looks to me like a bunch of sweaty almost-naked dudes hugging each other on the floor a lot. Oh, don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching MMA. I just find that quite often the hype kills the fun for me. Get Joe Rogan the fuck off the screen, I don't care about Brock Lesner, I want to watch two athletes compete. That's it.
