i think its more so up to the "regulars" to actually persuade these kids into staying longer. by showing them good shows, good bands and welcoming attitudes that makes them WANT to find out more and stick around
which i think victoria does a decent job of so far.

When I started going to shows in Vancouver it was the coldest snobbiest place on the planet. I think that if I had started going alone I would have stopped then and there but I had a buddy who was down so we started our own hardcore scene. By the time the old heads vindicated our existence our numbers were to big to care what they thought.

another band I find somewhat overhyped are Disrupt. they're good, had i been around to see them live maybe i'd get it, but you seriously might as well just listen to the first E.N.T. record.

zach, this wasnt meant to be a jab at new kids getting into hardcore through easily accessable bands. I was listening to a ton of bane/comeback kid, I know thew importance of bands like these for younger kids. my problem lies with the cool kids. the ones who come out of nowhere jocks these bands nuts, do whatever the bridge 9 board deems to be cool and generally act like thier shit doesnt stink. the kids who will be gone in 6 months to a year, the kids that treat hardcore like its disposable.
ZACH ATTACK wrote:
I'm really glad that when I was first getting into punk rock and hardcore there was nobody there to call me a shit because I was into bands that were easily accessable. Maybe they'd have more of a half hearted intrest in hardcore if they weren't treated like such an inconvience and judged as unworthy because they're new, but were instead welcomed and educated. I mean, I'm pretty sure you weren't born clutching a YOT record. We all have to start somewhere. At one time we were all those annoying little shits who didn't get it bugging the real hardcore kids at shows and blowing our loads over Comeback Kid records or whatever. I got lucky though and met a lot of great people who were just stoaked that I was showing an intrest in hardcore.
I dunno man, I guess that just doesn't bother me. Most of these kids wont ever have more than a superficial interest in hardcore, and I don't think there's anything wrong that. We live in a time where just about everything, including hardcore and punk rock have been turned into hyper-disposable commodities and anybody can check out whatever flavour of the week band with a click of the mouse. I tend to think that most of these kids acting like tourists along for a fun ride are just a product of our culture and I can't really fault them for that. It's kind of like a catch 22 because even though we reject the idea of a throw away culture hardcore doesn't exist in a vacuum and is bound to attract of segment of kids who just want to be cool and trendy. It's annoying but at the end of the day it really has a minimal effect on me or my relationship with hardcore punk. And some of these kids will start to identify with hardcore on a level deeper than fashion and contribute some really great things which never would have happened if they weren't once misguided teenagers trying to be cool. It's kind of a double edged knife because on the one hand we have to deal with a lot of annoying shit, but on the other hand if we just sort of stick our noses in the air and act all punker than thou than none of those annoying kids are ever going to get anything more out of hardcore than a vehicle to look cool. Like I say, welcome and educate. Some kids will get really into it and the ones who don't will be gone soon enough anyways, and we'll still be able to say we made our best effort.
I agree with you on most of these points. guess i've just lost patience for fairweather kids

Fair enough man. I've fully been known to say things like "hardcore should just end" and rail against kids who take whatever they want and don't contribute anything.

Another band to add to the list:
Crime in Stereo - Band was great up until ...Is Dead. I don't understand who kids loved it so much, I like the band, I like the style they went for on ...Is Dead, it just happens that they don't play that style of music well at all. They released two amazing lps and some even better Eps, but Is Dead is straight up a bad record. I guess kids will just love whatever B9 puts out, even if it a band watering themselves down to the point that they aren't even reconizable. Actaully, for the record there was one song on Is Dead that I though was great, I can't recall what it was called though. The rest of the record was awful.

Gotta disagree with you dude. I get what your saying, but I think this is a fantastic album. I was actually jamming it yesterday. I agree that there are bands out there doing the same style better, but ...Is Dead is a pretty solid album.

It's a yawnfest. I think it's cuz I liked that band for a long time before that album came out, and every change to their sound prior to it was really well done. Is Dead is a record I tried really hard to like, I've revisited it a good ten times, and every time I get bored. I think the song I really like is Nixon, I'll have to check when I get home from work. Even if Is Dead was well done, I'd still think it paled in comparision to the rest of their discography.Hollow wrote:New West Crew wrote:Another band to add to the list:

Fair enough. I'm not as familiar with the rest of their discography, so I'll just take your word for it.
