things to do in Nanaimo ?
moving to Nanaimo in a couple months, nice place just haven't found much to do when i visit.
would like to know what good places to go ? (bars, shows, party houses, squats, etc..... )
i play lots of shows here in van, just seeing if there was a good music scene out there.
the only places i played in nanaimo was at the cambie and some hall.
just wondering who on the board is from there.
looking forward seeing/jamming/partying with some of you guys.

You don't need any of them. You just need drugs.

Re: things to do in Nanaimo ?
i just escaped there last year. its a nice place if you dont like that much fun
BUT
The Cambie is a really good place if you have a good group of people to go split some cheap Cambie Brew pitchers. open all day too.
Fascinating Rhythm (great vinyl record store tooons of used stuff in the back you will be occupied for hours looking through all that crap)
good places to eat:
Armani's Grill
Longwood Pub

its cheap because no one wants to live there willingly
Re: things to do in Nanaimo ?
Oh man, oh man. Poor you.
Nanaimo sucks. Hang out with us. Let's start a band. There's nothing else to do. Oh, but don't get your hopes up. There are no venues, so we'll just play in my garage all the time until Vic wants us.
Other than that, we can....get high? Watch movies? Bike around? Fornicate? It's what we do.

Re: things to do in Nanaimo ?
all the times i been in nanaimo pretty much consists of beer store, walking around, beer store and the random bar....
i know many bands in victoria , just not to many in nanaimo.
i'll just try out some island forums to see if there are bands looking to play around town
my gf is the only one wanting to move there, starting to think, convincing her just to stay here
or staying here and let nanaimo have her

Re: things to do in Nanaimo ?
I heard Richard Chisholm and Eric Brunning musing on some pipe-dream of re-renting some old venue in order to host something besides nu-metal, pop rock, or pop punk, which are our staples.
But there is no action imminent on that at all.
The most legitimate music community is probably the few guitar-based indie rock groups that are clinging to the coastal rock. Great if you dig that, which I do.
In short it's a few quality high school groups that can't leave, and some bands that aren't ambitious enough to leave, or are in University.
That girl better be Cinderella, man.

Oh, she's Jessie. I'm sure Nanaimo would like her back!
Anyway it's cozy here, at least. You can go ocean kayaking with a '87 hatchback, $100 kayak and $4 in gas. So its a nice place to roleplay as an old person.
and yes; get high -> watch movies -> bike around -> fornicate

Re: things to do in Nanaimo ?
let's be honest Nanaimo is pretty much like victoria but with less shows, boring, not much goin on. if you're broke there's not much difference living in nanaimo, victoria, or anywhere else on the island; you hang out with friends,go to a pool hall or a bar, drink get high, etc.
In the winter it's a good place to go snowboarding/tobagganing cuz unlike victora there's some pretty decent hills. if you're straight edge and you move to nanaimo you will not be straight edge for long. However, the one good thing about nanaimo is that vih or malaspina is a pretty chill place where you can network with people and a lot of the kids in the music program are most of the time down to start a metal band or punk band or whatever. in that respect i like nanaimo better, camosun is ok but uvic is full of pretentious sandal and sweat pant wearing douchebags.
and whatever you do, DO NOT got to nickol street or surrounding area to try to buy weed, you will not find any. just junkies, i don't even think there is anywhere in victoria that sketchy.

Backed %100. Although the sandal/sweat pant wearing brigade has been taken over by the scarf/vest wearing brigade. They infest the theater department, which is across from the Fine Arts building, which is where all my writing classes are. They are loud, annoying, and the worst kind of hipster scum out there; which is saying something, as I am hipster scum.
God I like Theater kids.
